Welcome to the academic homepage of

Daniel L. Smith
Assistant Professor of New Testament

Department of Theological Studies
Saint Louis University

I joined the faculty of the Department of Theological Studies in August 2012.

From 2009-2012, I taught courses in Theology, Latin, and Composition at the University of Notre Dame.  I also investigated how knowledge of Greco-Roman and Jewish historiography can enrich our understanding of the New Testament.

Here at SLU, I am continuing my research into the ways in which knowledge of ancient Mediterranean languages, landscapes, and literature can enhance our understanding of the Jewish and Christian scriptures.  I am also interested in pedagogy and rhetoric, both ancient and modern.

As a Humboldt fellow, I spent the 2016-2017 academic year at LMU in Munich, working on my next book project, an investigation into the use of the Israelite wilderness traditions in the late Second Temple Jewish period.
