We had an amazing Battle of the Books this year with 51 student who qualified!  The Star Wars-themed teams battled hard and Red Resistance emerged victorious!  Congratulations to all our qualifiers, our winning team and a big thank you to all the parents who came and helped - we couldn't have done it without you!

Reading Without Walls

posted May 9, 2017, 9:16 AM by Alisha Santoianni

To kick off Children's Book Week (May 1 - 7) last week, the Monarch Elementary Library issued a challenge to our students: read without walls.   What does that mean? The National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Gene Luen Yang, came up with the "Reading Without Walls" challenge this year to get children (and adults) to read books they might not normally pick up in order to read outside their comfort zone and expand their horizons.

In a nutshell, the "Reading Without Walls" program challenges students to
  1. Read a book about a person who doesn't look like them or live like them
  2. Read a nonfiction book about a topic they know nothing about
  3. Read a book in a format they might normally not read (novel in verse, graphic novel, genre they don't usually read, poetry, etc.)
We have a table set up explaining the challenge and displaying some book suggestions (as an incentive, we're also offering a prize to a randomly drawn student who submits the name of the book they read as part of the challenge).  Happy reading!

It's starting to feel a little more like spring out there and what better way to celebrate than with some brand new books?!  PTA generously donated some extra money to our Monarch library and the first batch of books I was able to purchase with this money just came in.  Check out these amazing new nonfiction titles:

Our 4th and 5th graders got a first look last week when they played "musical books:"
Thank you PTA for your extremely generous donation which our students are loving!  We appreciate your continued support of the library and our students' love of books!

Help Monarch Library celebrate Day of the Dead by checking out our colorful display!  You'll find out about the history of the celebration, the food and drink used, and you can create sugar skulls (calaveras) or a Day of the Dead mask.  There is also a scavenger hunt if you're really feeling adventurous.  Come check it out!

Be sure to check out our Sugar Skull art in the library windows!
