Philosophies of teaching and grading

What are your beliefs about grades?  

Do you think grades should show only achievement, only effort, only improvement, or some mix of the three?  

Do you think grades motivate students to work harder?  

Do you think grades should measure readiness for the next level of school (high school or college)?

As many Hoover teachers have been thinking about grading in the past few months and several SJUSD schools are already in the midst of redesigning assessment and instruction, it's a timely moment to consider some of the excellent ideas raised by Carol Ann Tomlinson in her 2011 piece for Educational Leadership.
