The balanced calendar concept allows schools to decrease the amount of down instructional time through the summer while not increasing the number of days student attend.  This in turn, reduces the amount of learning lost over the summer.  Balanced calendars take the traditional school year and spread it out evenly with frequent breaks and a shorter summer vacation.
