  • History of the Spanish Language The Spanish language, also known as Castilian, is a Romance language originating in the Castile region of Spain. Today it has almost 400 million speakers world-wide and is commonly accepted as the second most spoken language in the world. Approximately, 75% of Spanish used today has roots in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Arabic (8%). A small percentage of the language borrowed words from French and Italian as well.
