Transition Evening 2016

Welcome back to our families for 2017 and a special welcome to those families who are new to Silverdale School.

We are very excited to have 3 new teachers join our wonderful team this year. Sheree McLeish, Cheryl Knapp and Ona Smalenskas come to Team Tui with a wealth of skills and experience. We look forward to working alongside them and sharing their enthusiasm for teaching and learning.

What’s Happening This Term?

This first newsletter of the year is designed to give you an idea of what your child will be learning this term.  It will also outline the routines and expectations in Team Tui.

SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HEALTH: Is the Grass Always Greener?

Our focus for Term 1 is an inquiry into movement and change. We will be basing our study around Moana, a novel and movie set in the ancient South Pacific world of Oceania. Throughout this unit we will be exploring ways people migrated in the past and compare this to movement and change in the present day. We will also look at themes such as being resilient, resourceful and reflecting on who you are and where you come from.

To reinforce our learning we are planning a trip to the movies to watch Moana. We will send out details in regards to this later in the term.

READING – We will be running guided reading groups this term with a focus on comprehension skills to deepen meaning and to help children to think critically about texts.

WRITING - This term we are focusing on descriptive writing and environmental writing.  We are working on detail and description, as well as punctuating our work to improve meaning.

MATHS -  We will be working on Number across the domains with a focus on problem solving. Statistics is our strand focus.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION - Fitness sessions of 30 minutes are held 3 times a week. Our PE block is on Thursday afternoons and we are learning traditional maori games this term. Children will need to bring their PE uniforms to school every day.
