Shenandoah County Public Schools is committed to creating a culture that leads to deeper learning, a culture where continuous growth and improvement is expected for everyone -- students, teachers and staff. We recognize that the jobs our students will have when they complete their education may not even exist at this time. It is our responsibility to provide not only the academic content, but also the skills that our students will need to be successful in our global society. To help fulfill this responsibility, Shenandoah County Public Schools has created an Instructional Framework which encompasses our beliefs about teaching and learning. These beliefs are incorporated into the teaching and learning of the academic knowledge and skills which embody our curricula.
In order to integrate skills into the teaching of academic subjects, SCPS has developed a vision for learning known as the Cornerstones. We believe that the SOLs set the minimum academic standard and recognize that mastering this knowledge alone does not provide for deeper learning. Therefore, the SCPS Cornerstones identify the skills students need to succeed in work and life. These skills are Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Problem Solving, and Persistence, Initiative & Self-Direction. By simultaneously targeting the development of the Cornerstone skills and the mastery of academic content, students will become immersed in an engaging culture of deeper learning that provides authentic, applicable, and relevant learning experiences. Students will improve their abilities to communicate, collaborate, think critically, create, problem solve, and persist in the face of struggle, assuring that they are prepared to meet the demands of the ever-changing global society.
