Get Ready4Learning!

INTRODUCTION

Learning to read involves more than recognising words on a page. Children must also use their language skills to understand what the individual words mean and interpret them in the context in which they are used. On top of this, children need to use language skills to understand the instructions given by teachers, follow the curriculum and acquire new knowledge as well as to engage successfully with their classmates. Children entering school with poor language skills are therefore at risk of educational and social underachievement. The Get Ready for Learning Project (GR4L) was launched in September 2012 to evaluate the impact of structured oral language intervention in Reception-aged children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and monolingual children with language weaknesses. Funded by the Nuffield Foundation, the programme aimed to investigate how we can support these children in developing their language abilities to build a stronger language foundation for formal schooling. The project came to an end in December 2015.
