Why is the History of Linguistics studied?

YouTube Video

Why do people study the History of Linguistics, I hear you ask. Well, I'm here to tell you.

Firstly, (some) people are fascinated with the past. The weirdos. Not only that, but some other people, probably the same lot, come to think of it, have a desire to have a greater understanding of our intellectual framework.

Vivien Law was one of those people who thought that it was cool to do some studying on the History of Linguistics and she said that by looking at the History of Linguistics one can gather a greater understanding of the human psyche. She stated: "The one-sidedness that we perceive in the past warns us to be alert to the one-sidedness of the present and it is here that this history of linguistics has something to offer which no other branch of intellectual history can."
