Network Usage Guidelines

The information technology resources of Spring Hill College are owned and maintained by Spring Hill College. Use of this technology is a privilege, and users have responsibilities. Use of the College’s information technology resources should be supportive of the mission, goals, and values of Spring Hill College. You have two ways to connect to the internet in your room, the Ethernet connection which is provided in the wall and/or connecting to the wireless network. Student responsibilities include the following:
  • All computers connected to Spring Hill College’s network must have the latest operating system patches and be running up-to-date virus-scanning software.
  • Due to the interference and disruption they may cause to the network and other students, personal wireless routers are highly discouraged.
  • Any personal wireless router which is connected to the SHC network must be registered with the Office of Information Technology.
  • Spring Hill College reserves the right to disconnect any independently installed network connectors, including routers, that are not registered or are disruptive to providing network connections to Spring Hill College faculty, staff, and students.
  • All users of Spring Hill College’s network are responsible for the security of their passwords and accounts. Passwords should not be shared with others, and should be changed on a routine basis.
  • Spring Hill College highly recommends that network users do not submit important information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, on a website form unless the website uses SSL encryption.
Inappropriate use of information technology exposes Spring Hill College to a number of risks, including but not limited to virus attacks, legal liability, and compromise of network systems and services.
