Monthly Meeting Notices

If you have not made it to Sharpening Iron recently, or have never made it, each meeting is stand alone and is not based on a book series, or previous series of meetings. All of you guys and your friends are very welcome. And with the “name tape” that we put on (Just green masking tape that we write our names on that I provide, I am really too cheap for name tags) we soon get to know each others name. It really is a friendly and good bunch of guys. If you have never been to an SI meeting, usually about 30 guys show up so it won't be just you and me !!

Blessings, Ted

Don't miss this monthly meeting, as we are having Tom and Gabe from Tentmakers Ministry, Wilderness North speak at this monthly meeting. These guys are traveling all the way from Rochester, MN to tell us about their new experiences in the ministry. It would be great to have you bring a few younger guys along to hear about their experiences and their vision for the future.

Daniel Leadership Institute and Year on Mission - Two young men's story.

Thomas and Gabriel spent 40 days in the wilderness in a primitive cabin at Wilderness North. Under the instruction of dedicated and mature trainers, they learned the skills of communication, building relationships, studying God's word, living in community and serving our Lord Jesus Christ. Maturing in Christ is the greater outcome of this discipling ministry called Tentmakers. Tom and Gabe will share their story, gifts, and talents as they are now sent out on a year on mission to a church community in Rochester, MN. They conclude their year with a month in the Czech Republic working with our Tentmakers team in Europe to further the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus.

The speaker for this month will be Eric Barto Eric is a part of our group and has a wide variety of interests and study topics. I had asked him a few months ago to bring a message to that will continue to help us to be more effective husbands and Men of God. The title of his message is “Discover Yourself and Find God”.

Eric recently sent me the following note, in part that give us an idea of what we can learn from Eric's study and experiences.

Discover Yourself and Find God”

Psalm 139 describes how well God knows us. Thinking back, this verse was a changing point in my life. In some ways I was feeling alone and confused about some of the things I did... This verse was a catalyst for me to learn more about people and ultimately myself. I gained grace for others and myself.

Through a tool like the Enneagram we become aware of our real “true self”, we have an opportunity to be better husbands, fathers, brothers, friends and ultimately disciples.

Uncovering our true self gives a glimpse of Gods design for us and exposes how we’ve knowing or unknowingly chosen to interact with the world.

Eric Barto

The July 2018 Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron is being rescheduled to Tuesday July 10, 2018, due to the 4th of July Holiday.

The June 2018 Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron will be held in the Fireside Room of Journey Christian Church, at 14th Street and Washington Avenue in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm, this coming Tuesday, June 5, 2018.

Come early for coffee, cookies and conversation at 6:30 pm.

The speaker for this month will be Dave Hall. Dave is part of our group and among his many other talents, he is also a caring social worker with Carlton County. Dave is going to speak about “The Value and Power of Community !!” We all need to live life with others in order to live our own lives well. As Arlen so aptly put, “when you are alone, you believe the lies you tell yourself”.

Sometimes particular “communities” can be the wrong one for us, but never fear, God's got the right one out there for us. Or we can be a positive change agent in those communities that we are part of.

In addition, we're going to have some discussion time about if there are ways the area churches can jointly do more to help out with any special needs, provide caring service or do projects with and for our brothers and sisters of the Fond du Lac Band.

Vince's
BIOGRAPHY

Vince Miller grew up on the west coast in Vallejo, California where he spent his childhood. At age 20, he made a profession of faith while in college and felt a sudden and sharp call to work in full-time ministry. After college and graduate school, Vince invested two decades working with notable ministries like Young Life, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Eagle Brook Church, and in Senior Interim roles. He currently lives in St. Paul, Minnesota with Christina, his wife of 21 years. They have three children.

In March of 2014, he founded Resolute out of his passion for the discipleship and leadership development of men. This passion was born out of his own need for mentorship. Vince would say that he turned everywhere to find a man who would mentor, disciple, and develop him and over the course of his spiritual life and that he often received two answers from well-meaning Christian leaders.

"Either they did not know what to do in a mentoring relationship, or they simply did not have the time to do it."

Vince discovered that he was not alone and that many Christian men were seeking a mentorship relationship with other men. Out of this he felt compelled to build an organization that would focus on one thing, ensuring that men who want to be discipled have the opportunity and that they can have tools to disciple other men.

Vince is an authentic and transparent leader who loves to communicate to men and has a deep passion for God's Word. He has authored 11 books, including his newest book CONVICTIONS, which helps men understand how to close the gap between feeling convicted and living with conviction. Vince is the primary content creator of Resolute content and training materials.

The November 2017 Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron will be held in the Fireside Room of the Journey Christian Church, at 14th Street and Washington Avenue in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm, next Tuesday, November 7, 2017.

Come early for coffee, cookies and conversation at 6:30 pm.

The speaker for this month's Sharpening Iron meeting is Ben Salmi, Youth Pastor for the Journey. The title of his message is, "You, Me and the Pharisee."

Ben tells me that his message is still a work in progress,

and says, “I hope to highlight Jesus' disdain for the religiosity of the Pharisee, in light of the fact that they thought they were "doing it right". I believe that much of what Jesus said to the religious leaders of his day, needs to be looked at by us, the church to ensure we are not in danger of the same fate as the Pharisees. Are we doing it right? What would Jesus say to us today about our religiosity?”

The October 2017 Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron will be held in the Fireside Room of the Journey Christian Church, at 14th Street and Washington Avenue in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm, next Tuesday, October 3, 2017.

I often read Christianity Today on-line and a couple months ago I read a very interesting article and I contacted the writer about giving the monthly message for our October Sharpening Iron meeting via Skype. Didn't think it be right to ask him to drive all the way here from Moundridge, Kansas, so we get to try this new idea out. (New for me anyway !!).

Message title: I Have Called You Friends: Discovering the Jesus Way of Friendship

Key passage: John 15:9-17

Bio:
Brad Roth serves as pastor at West Zion Mennonite Church in Moundridge, Kansas. He grew up baling hay, tending sheep, and shearing Christmas trees on a farm in Illinois. He is a graduate of Augustana College, Harvard Divinity School, and Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary. Brad has a heart for serving God and God’s people in rural communities. He’s passionate about sharing faith in word and deed, and living out God’s love in the community. He and his wife, Lici, enjoy bicycling, tending a garden, keeping chickens, and playing with their two sons. Brad writes about encountering God in the everyday at DoxologyProject.com. His book,
God's Country: Faith, Hope, and the Future of the Rural Church was published by Herald Press in September. It's available on Amazon.

The May 2017 Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron will be held in the Fireside Room of the Journey Christian Church, at 14thStreet and Washington Avenue in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm, on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.

Come early for coffee, cookies and conversation at 6:30 pm.

The Speaker for this month is Eric Barto and the theme for this month's meeting is “Being an Effective and Godly Father”. Eric has some good things for us to consider, but he also would like to have the group share their own experiences and ideas in a group discussion setting. So be thinking about how you can add to the conversation!!!

Eric and I were talking this past Sunday at church and we discussed how many of us have had very positive father figures that God has put into our lives, in addition to our own human father. I know I've had about a half dozen or so men that were in my life that were definitely father figures. So even if you are not yet a father, or your kids are grown, there are many ways that you may already be or become an even more effective father figure in someone else's life.

So come Tuesday, May 2 to share and learn how you can be even more effective in this important job that we as men are called to!!!

See you on May 2, 2017. Bring a friend !!!

The April 2017 Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron will be held in the Fireside Room of the Journey Christian Church, at 14th Street and Washington Avenue in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm, on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.
Come early for coffee, cookies and conversation at 6:30 pm.

Because of this month's meeting theme, WOMEN coming at the invitation of MEN to impart some very valuable knowledge using a discussion panel, a kind of “mind meld”, so to speak,  I thought I'd include a couple of familiar quotes from

"Star Trek"

Of course these quotes are:
'"To boldly go where no man — where no one — has gone before."
This quote applies to both the men adventurous and brave enough to attend the April 4th Sharpening Iron meeting and the ladies bold enough to present their ideas and findings at the meeting.

"Live long, and prosper."

This quote applies to all of us!!!  We WILL prosper with stronger relationships!!!

So the theme for this month will be “Men, What are your Women Thinking”. At my request, Kathi Parpala and a small panel of women of different ages are going to share with us guys some of the hopes, dreams and concerns that many women have that will be helpful for us men to better communicate, understand, support and bless the women in our lives. This panel discussion will be very helpful for all of us guys, no matter what your age or marriage status is. Kathi and her friends have worked very hard on doing a wonderful presentation so I encourage all you guys to attend this meeting.

See you on April 4, 2017.  Bring a friend !!!

I'll be there, hope you will be there too!!!! Matt has a guys ministry to young adults and older teens so I really encourage young guys to come to this SI meeting.

See you on February 7, 2017. Bring a friend !!!

The message for this month will be a taped archive from the 1995 Promise Keepers event held in Minneapolis at the Metro Dome. I was there and it was an amazing event. It was a kind of precursor to our own meetings, albeit a little bigger. Ha ha.
I found copies of all the messages and I thought that one of the most pertinent would be the message ”Raising the Standard in Our Personal Life”, by Pastor Tony Evans from Dallas, TX.

The speaker for this month's meeting was Pastor Rich. As you know Rich is retiring from full time pastoral ministry by the end of the year, so I very much encouraged men to come to this SI meeting to hear a very insightful message. Rich has given me the following information on the content of his talk.

How to Stay Grounded in These Crazy Times

Whether we're talking about terrorists, Syrian immigrants, Supreme Court decisions, or the steady secularization of America, Christians have the resource to deal with each disturbing trend or social crisis. We have timeless truths contained in God's Word. But do we really believe it? ...do we really know and understand it? ...do we have the courage to interpret it accurately (despite cultural pressures to view it through politically correct lenses)?

Christians often have knee-jerk reactions to secular voices or other challenges to our church culture. Some march mindlessly in lock-step with popular Christian leaders—but never stop to consider the nuances and the implications of their responses. We need people who know and trust God's Word—and know why it is trustworthy. We need people who will study diligently so they can "rightly divide" the word of truth. We should not be parrots, cranking out prepackaged Christian platitudes. We need to know the substance and the reasons for the foundations of our "Christian world view."

The questions really are not about gay marriage or abortion or fetal tissue research or transgender bathrooms in elementary schools. The questions are more about whether we are able to articulate God's truth with conviction and compassion. How can we project a reasonable voice in today's illogical society? How can we be salt in a world where we've been pushed away from the table of public dialogue?

Have a Happy and Blessed Thanksgiving celebration !!

May 2014 Monthly Meeting

The May Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron and Northland Sharpening Iron was held at the Cloquet Gospel Tab at 1400 Washington Ave. in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 6, 2014.

Pastor Kevin Erickson from Virginia, MN was available starting at 6:00 pm for an informal, one-on-one time, to learn more about the art of kayak building. He had two kayaks and paddles along for us to look at.

The speakers were Pastor Kevin Erickson from Cross Hill Community Church, an EFCA central city church in Virginia, Minnesota; and Greg Mertzig, Case Manager from the Community Offender Reentry Program (CORP), SOAR Career Solutions located in Duluth.

Pastor Kevin is planning an epic journey that will take him all the way to the Yukon Territory of Canada. There, an annual kayak and canoe race called the Yukon River Quest is run. It spans 444 miles along the old gold rush regions with twisting rivers and roaring rapids. It's the longest such race in the world.

The race will be held from June 25-29, 2014. In his own words, apart from certifiable insanity, why would he do that? To promote the ministries of Cross Hill, raise much needed renovation and ministry funds, and ultimately to glorify God! Check out the links at http://www.crosshillchurch.org/ to learn more about Cross Hill, the Yukon River Challenge, Cross Hill’s fund raising goals, how you can donate, and the progress of this crazy adventure! Check back often as they continue to add new content and track PK’s progress.

The following is an excerpt from the article on the WDIO website featuring Pastor Kevin's upcoming trip.

In the basement of the Cross Hill Community Church is a workshop where Erickson builds canoe and kayak paddles. The money raised from selling the paddles goes toward the renovations. He is even building, by hand, the kayak that will take him along the 444 mile trip. Though him and his family are paying for the trip themselves, they thought it was a good idea to use the trip itself as a fundraiser.”
You can read the entire article on Kevin's trip at http://www.wdio.com/article/stories/s3334771.shtml .
Greg Mertzig, sent this informational email to me a few weeks ago and I am including it in the Northland Sharpening Iron invitation. Greg gave a 15 minute PowerPoint on this opportunity for a mentoring ministry. The Soar program is not faith based but it is my understanding that we as mentors are free to share our faith and how it impacts our life. When you read more about Pastor Kevin's ministry in Virginia, you will see that they also do mentoring of ex-offenders. That is one of the reasons I am combining these two presentations.
Greg's email:
As I mentioned (to Ted) on the phone, I am a Case Manager for the Community Offender Reentry Program (CORP) at SOAR Career Solutions here in Duluth. CORP is a voluntary program that helps ex-offenders overcome life obstacles through intensive case management, restorative justice, career development, and mentoring. CORP recently received new grant funding to reestablish the mentoring portion of the program. We received the funding in part because research indicates reentry programs with strong mentoring programs have far lower rates of recidivism. Soon after we received the funding I became the Case Manager/Mentor Coordinator. As the Mentor Coordinator I recruit volunteers from the community to become CORP mentors. Mentors are matched with our clients and crime stops. Just kidding, I wish it were that easy! Here is how it works in a nut shell. Clients are referred to our program by Case Managers at various Federal and State prisons. I travel to the institution to work with the client when they are incarcerated. We call this part pre-release planning. After the clients are released from their respective institution we meet with them weekly to assist them in overcoming life obstacles. Recently, the big push is making a huge effort to find these people a mentor before they are released from prison so when they, “get out” they have at least one pro-social influence in their life. We know that case management alone is not enough; however, we know that our reentry program works. Our most recent data indicates a 16 percent rate of recidivism, which is without the mentoring portion. The Minnesota DOC reports a 48 percent rate of recidivism. When I read the numbers, it made me feel pretty good about the work we are doing here. Imagine what we can accomplish with a solid group of mentors.
Taking all this into account, I am actively recruiting mentors for our program. We are looking for volunteers that are willing to spend one hour per week as a mentor. Mentors must be over 21 years old. We welcome anyone that wants to make a difference in someone’s life and I believe that everyone has something to offer in this type of relationship. We require that our mentors go through training. The training is offered once per month and it takes approximately two hours. The training includes how to establish boundaries, confidentiality agreements, and CORP procedure and policy.
CORP’s formal goal is an improvement in public safety; my personal mission inside of this goal is to help people that need help.”

April 2014 Monthly Meeting
The April Monthly Meeting for Sharpening Iron was held in the Fireside Room at the Tab in Cloquet, starting at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 1, 2014. We had over 30 guys attend,  most came early for coffee, cookies and conversation at 6:30 pm.
-The speaker for this month's meeting was Lee Harris from our group. The title for Lee's message was the “Armor of Christ”.The premise of his message is the need to suit up with all the Godly attributes that the word gives us in order to stand against the enemy.  Lee always brings a wonderful message and great enthusiasm, and this time was no exception.  He gave a wonderful and powerful message!!!
-In addition, Matt Scott from Duluth will be with us to tell about the ComeUnity 6K race to raise money for water wells in East Africa for those needing this vital community resource.
Matt Scott, the Duluth Race Director of the ComeUnity 6k Duluth also gave a short presentation. Matt told us that 6k is the average distance many women walk to get even polluted water in East Africa. ComeUnity is committed to changing that fact... through child sponsorship, education, and sustainability efforts. Matt is a UMD graduate, avid fisherman, insurance salesman, and loves to read his bible. He attends Lakeview Covenant.
Matt told us that they collect money for this worthy cause from runner registrations and business sponsorships. This year they hope to have a pre and after-race party at Amazing Grace Cafe where they hope to share information on the program. It will also be an opportunity to give. They have a goal of $10,000 which is the average cost of one well. All ages are welcome. They have a Kiddie Dash this year. They had about 80 people last year and the majority of them were female. For whatever reason, this cause strikes a chord with women and he's had a hard time getting men to come. He is hoping for 200 plus this year. Let's see what we can do to change that ratio. Pass on this info to other guys of all ages who would like this challenge and who care about this issue. You can come to the April Monthly meeting and find out more, or email Matt at mattscott213@gmail.com . You can also find out more about this effort that has chapters in different places in the US at www.comeunitynow.org . Even if you don't run, a contribution to this cause would be welcome !!!

December 6, 2011, Monthly Meeting at the Cloquet Gospel Tab

We had a great pancake supper.  Thanks to the guys who prepared the food.

The following is what I asked for......

"And this month, I really need your help with the message !! As I mentioned last meeting, I would like you come prepared to share at least one (or more) scripture with the group that has been especially meaningful to you in your walk with the Lord. It may be a verse or two that has been a significant challenge in your Christian life, with which you may have had some victories and some failures too. It may be a “life verse”, or it may a verse that was and is a great comfort to you, or one that is you think is exceptionally powerful. Share the verse with the group and take a couple minutes to tell us why it is so important to you. Everyone bring your bible to the meeting."

It went very well I thought.  Everyone brought at least one verse as a special verse.

Go to "Audio Recordings" subpage on the  left  sidebar to listen.  It will be worth listening to.

Since his new commitment to the Lord in 2005, he has read many books on the subject of men and God’s role for them in this life. He has been under the tutelage of God, with help from great teachers Bob Loubek, Tim Halverson, Joe Pinkham, and Mark Pavola - all Godly, spirit filled men.

Eric's message was titled:

"One man's journey into the soul of man".

Since 2005, Eric has been involved in ministry to men, participating and leading meetings, retreats, and wilderness trips.
Reaching men through an experience in God’s wild creation is his new found passion.
We had a good turn out for this meeting.  Eric did a great job and his Powerpoint was very cool.

Gordy Larsen talked about his and his wife Becky's ongoing mission work in Jamaica where he has taught refrigeration and helped construct different buildings.  Gordy is a guy who is a skilled craft person and has a desire to share that knowledge with those in need of outreach for the Lord.   I have known Gordy and Becky for over 25 years and they are good friends.  Gordy had quadruple bypass survey on November 29 but he is doing very well and is scheduled to go to Jamica in a couple weeks.  He gave a great message, showing us what a dedicated person can do for the Lord

Pastor Virgil Rasmussen gave us an exciting challenge on the topic, "Finishing Well".  One of the ideas he shared is that we may have things in our lives that we have done well, others not so well, and others not well at all.  The things that we have not done well in the past should be moved into the "doing well" category of our life.  It's not good enough to just maintain the status quo and not slip back, but we need to become stronger and stronger.

One of Virgil's heros is obviously the Apostle John.  John was "in the Spirit" on the Island of Patmos when he was in his 90's and had one of the most outstanding experiences recorded in history, the Revelation of Jesus Christ.  John definitely finished well, and the challenge is there for us to finish well in the Spirit.

The outline for the talk is now posted on the "Iron Filings" .  John and Mike gave a very intriging talk  The recorder shut off after 15 minutes so the entire message was not recorded, but we did get John's testimony.  Well worth listening to.  It is on the Tab Website.

Title: "The Commission of a Leader"

John Burmeister was born and raised in a Christian family and in a Bible believing church. In his early teens he went after the things of the world, seeking popularity and fulfillment apart from God and ended up using drugs and drinking heavily while deeply involved in the partying lifestyle; in and out of jail for a period of three years, incurring a broken neck and two felonies while almost killing two others in a car accident he was miraculously saved and commissioned by God to be a leader.

Mike Odberg is founder and Operations Director/Lead Guide for Ascending Adventures, Inc. and a former teacher, coach, and college outdoor recreation coordinator. Mike seemed to have the "American dream" in his grasp when coaching revealed the depth of his pride and exposed a crumbling foundation. Mike's frequent trips canoeing into the wilderness offered him a revelation of Jesus Christ through the Lord's creation and offered an opportunity to re-examine his life. After much wrestling, he received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior in 1998.

Together, John and Mike are developing Mighty Oaks Academy for Men, an intense ten-month, discipleship training school for men. Mighty Oaks is a combined effort of Ascending Adventures, Inc. and Foundations International School of Ministry. Mighty Oaks will launch in July 2011.

We were challenged by Paul as he gave a message titled, "The Adventure-Following God's Breadcrumb Trail By Faith". Paul Sundberg giving photo tips to the guys

The speaker for February 8th was Paul Sundberg. Paul is the Park Manager for the Gooseberry Falls State Park. I have known Paul for many, many years and I have always appreciated his enthusiasm for the North Shore, and respected his commitment to the Lord.   We had a great time with Paul even though the weather was pretty bad.  Even so, about 20 guys showed up and we really enjoyed Paul's presentation.

Among his other talents, Paul is an accomplished nature photographer. I visited his website and was absolutely blown away with the quality of his work.
Before our regular meeting time, at about 6:15 pm or so, at my request, Paul spent some time providing a “question and answer” tutorial on wildlife and landscape photography for those of us that were interested.

During the regular meeting time. Paul gave us a presentation of some of his photographic work focused on God's wonderful Northshore and the BWCA. Paul also told us a little about his experience with Christ.

I have attached a “Screen Capture” of his website to this notice.  You can visit Paul's website at http://www.paulsundbergphotography.com

If you want an audio of his talk, let me know.
