Great Expectations: Being God's Man in this Present World by Ted Sexton

Great Expectations: Being God's Man in this Present World December 10, 2013

God has Great Expectations for us as Christian Men. And we can have Great Expectations for the kind of man we can become, and expectations of how God can make it happen. As men, we have a place in God's kingdom that is different from women and children. We will explore these ideas which will include characteristics and roles that God has for us uniquely as men.

Some of the worthy characteristics and roles noted below are shared by women as well as men, but it seems to me that men have a huge stake in how these particular characteristics are are all played out in our lives.

Worthy Characteristics of a
Man of God
The Dark Side, (sometimes accurately earned, but other times untruly accepted through false guilt; sometimes extremely over the top, or sometimes very lacking, but the failure mode is always redeemable !!)
Holy, Godly
Apathetic, or actively evil
Faithful, Courageous
Not a believer, untrustworthy
Protector of your wife, family friends and community
Not caring, or a coward
Man of Integrity, Courageous
A cheat, law breaker, deceiver
Honorable, honest, man of your word
Comforter, Courageous
Harsh, uncaring
Builder and fixer. Being a fixer is not a bad thing
Lazy, destroyer, untrained
Strong in spirit, body and mind
Domineering, weak in morals, lacking determination, vacillating, undependable
Strong-Tender, gracious in your love relationships
Unconcerned, harsh, rude, weak, vacillating
Adventurous-Cautious, they may seem in conflict
but done right,they are not
Adventurous guy that does stupid things or a fearful guy that does nothing
Forgiving, Courageous
Carries grudges, is bigoted, judgmental and hateful
Is selfish, and doesn't care for others
Valuer of Others
Tears down, does not build up
Can't count on them, changes mind
Impatient, intolerant
Warrior, Courageous
Fearful, a hider, weak, changeable
Does not embody fatherly values
Uncaring about the growth of other men
A Man of Strong Endurance
Weak and does not train for stresses of life
Abuser, harsh or not manly in conduct
Husband, head of the home, lover and protector of our wives, Christ like
Unfaithful, abuser, uncaring, unlike Christ

What are positive and negative characteristics on the list that you and I as individuals may have?

Where do we especially fall short? Lust? Rage? and Shame? Are these weaknesses common among men?
Are there visions and goals that you once had, but you no longer have, or did not reach?
What happened that you did not reach them?
What are the visions, goals and dreams that you may have in the category of
Great Expectations
  • Ministry
  • Healthy and strong families
  • Community service

Do our characteristics and giftedness affect us reaching our visions, goals and expectations?
How does being a man influence what our goals are and how we reach them?
Do our strengths as men sometimes become our weakness and vice versa?
Do we use who we are well, or do we abuse who we are?
How do we get to the goals?
How do we avoid failure?
How do we avoid negative influences?
Are all men tempted and influenced by the same thing?

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”    February 11, 2014

Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” KJV

Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint;

But happy is he who keeps the law.” NKJ

Vision-faith-purpose-boldness! At some level, they are similar concepts.

Faith, courage, what is the correlation between the two?

Do we accomplish anything with out a vision? If you don't know where you are going, you already there.

Your vision should be:

  • From God!!

  • It can be from the creativeness and giftedness that God has given us individually as men, as one created in His likeness!!

  • Can inspire others.

  • Can be unsung and unheralded but of value to God and His people and His creation.

The life span of a vision:

  • Death of a vision, can this happen and can there there be a resurrection of the vision?

  • Do we ever have many visions with no fruition on all of them, but maybe on the next one?

  • Are some visions valuable only in getting us going? Are all ideas really a vision or valuable?

  • Do individual visions last for ever?

What does the enemy want to do with the visions God has given us? (After all he is the devil)

  • Discourages

  • Distracts

  • Distorts

  • Devalues

  • Disrupts

  • Disturbs

  • Delays

  • Defeats

  • Devours

  • Destroys

How does God interact with our visions? (After all, He is the Everlasting One!!!)

  • Encourages us in pursuing the vision!

  • Envelops us with love and assurance.

  • Entrusts us with the vision.

  • Enables us with His competence.

  • Empowers us for His service.

  • Ensures the outcome.

  • Endorses HIS ministry in us.

  • Endures our shortcomings with His love!!
