About Sharpening Iron at the Journey Christian Church in Cloquet, MN,

If you have not made it to a Sharpening Iron Men's Meeting in Cloquet recently, or have never made it, each monthly meeting is stand alone and is not based on a book series, or previous series of meetings, as our meetings are generally based on a "featured speaker" format.

All guys and your friends are very welcome to attend. We put on name tape (really green masking tape that we write our names on, I'm too cheap to buy actual name tags).  We soon get to know each others name. It really is a friendly and good bunch of guys. If you have never been to an SI meeting, usually about 30 guys show up, so it won't be just you and me !! No matter where you go to church, you are welcome. Look at the pages on the left for more specific information.

Sharpening Iron is a group of men from the Journey Christian Church (formerly called the Cloquet Gospel Tabernacle), located on 14th Street and Washington Avenue in Cloquet, Minnesota. The name, Sharpening Iron is derived from Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (NIV) A fair number of guys from other area churches also attend.

Adventure for Men is prominent in our logo. The adventure that is being referred to is serving the Lord Jesus Christ. And to meet that goal, it is important that the men of the Journey get to know each other better, and have opportunity for service, fun, discipleship, outreach and fellowship.

A central part of our group activities are the monthly meetings. We usually schedule the monthly meeting on the 1st Tuesday evening of the month at the Journey. We get together for coffee at 6:30 pm, and start the meeting at about 7:00 pm. We usually share praise reports and hear a message of challenge and inspiration by one of the group or from a visitor, and we end in a time of prayer.

It is one of our goals to have some adventure in our lives from time to time to help men get connected to each other. For example, in July of 2009, SI sponsored a three day sea kayak trip to the Apostle Island area. Sixteen guys from SI and friends enjoyed the trip, which included times of devotionals. In August of 2010, eleven of us went on a three day canoe trip on Frear Lake, not too far from Tofte, MN. In August of 2011, a bunch of the guys and a few sons had a fishing, camp-out at Scenic State Park near Bigfork, MN. We have done several Brule River Whitewater Kayak day trips. We did another sea kayak trip to the Apostle islands in August of 2013.

We are exploring ways to serve too. In December of last the past few years, Lee Harris and Chris Martindale organized Toy Drives for the needy. This was a blessing and a great success. In the spring of 2010, we collected eleven wheelchairs for Haiti earthquake victims, and brought them to the Ironwood Springs Miracle Ranch near Rochester, MN for shipment to Haiti. In March 2011, we held a fishing fun(d)raiser for water wells in Tanzania. In early fall of 2013, we organized three separate wood cutting and splitting events for those in need of this help. This year we have helped a number of people with moves or other services similar to that.
