The Middle Years Programme, MYP, is an educational framework focused on developing life-long learners with 21st century skills. Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School offers the MYP to students in grades 7-10.
Students are inspired and motivated to develop their Learner Profile to become:
Teachers make connections with the content of the Sunshine State Standards and the real-world through the Areas of Interaction.
-Language A -Mathematics
-Language B -Art
-Humanities -Technology (semester)
-Science -Physical Education (semester)
Teachers develop units to teach students the content. Students are invited to learn about the content with a unit question. Throughout the unit, the content is connected to the real world through a big idea or significant concept. At the end of the unit, students will answer the unit question through an assessment task.
Student learning in each unit of instruction is assessed with a task that is evaluated using assessment criteria unique to each of the 8 subjects.
MYP Curriculum Model
MYP students must identify needs in their local, national, and/or global community and improve those needs through Community Service. Currently all 7th-8th graders complete 10 hours of service. 9th-10th graders complete 20 hours. All MYP community service is recorded on Managebac. 9th-10th grade MYP hours automatically fulfill Bright Future hours, no additional paperwork is provided.
In the final year of the progamme, students complete a Personal Project illustrating mastery of skills and knowledge gained in the MYP Programme. 10th grade students work for one year investigating, planning, creating, and evaluating their project. The final products and/or outcomes are shared during the MYP Personal Project Showcase in March.
Students that successfully complete the MYP in grade 10 will receive a Certificate of Completion from Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr High School and will be promoted to the Diploma Programme.
