Biotechnology is multidisciplinary in nature and it encompasses several disciplines of basic sciences and engineering. The science disciplines cover Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Tissue Culture, Genetic Engineering, Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics and it leans heavily on process, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering since large scale cultivation of microorganisms and cells, their down stream processing, etc. are based on them. By seeing the ever increasing demand of biotechnology and its business potential there is a pressing need to develop human resource.
The Department of Biotechnology at Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University was started from the academic year 1994 with full financial support from Government of Maharashtra for building (13087.92 sq.ft), equipment, teaching faculty and nonteaching staff. At present this department offers a full-fledged two-year postgraduate course in Biotechnology and also actively engaged in research activities. The M.Sc. curricula consist of Theory and Practicals in various disciplines like Molecular Biology, Genetic Engineering, Bioinformatics, Plant tissue culture, Biochemical Engineering, Fermentation Biology, Analytical Techniques, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, etc. elective papers include Bioenergetics, Drug discovery and designing, Phytosecondary metabolites and its bioactivity and Protein structure analysis etc. We also offer projects to M.Sc. III & IV semester students as a part of their regular curriculum. In addition to this, for the exposure of the students, we conduct educational tour every year to Biotech industries and institutions. Department is having major and minor projects funded by various agencies such as DST, UGC, DBT, DRDO, RGSTC, etc. Department also offers Certificate course in Plant Tissue culture.
Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, New Delhi has established Bioinformatics Infrastructure facility in the Department. Department of Science and Technology, Government of India has given financial assistance to the Department under DST- FIST programme.
Biotechnology Consortium, New Delhi has selected several passed out students and sponsored them at various Biotechnology industries all over India for six month training. Many of them have been absorbed by the industries, such as Monsanto Mahyco, Jalna; Wockhardt, Aurangabad; J.K. Fertilizers, Hyderabad; Reddys Lab, Hyderabad, Serum Institute, Pune, Bharat Serum, Mumbai; Ankur seeds, Nagpur; Auroprobe Laboratory, New Delhi, Reliance, Life Science, Mumbai etc.
