    Microsoft Excel

This class is intended to follow after Basic Computer Skills(BCS). Although students need not have taken BCS, it is assumed that they have some of the fundamental skills that BCS teaches. This class moves quickly, so handouts are used extensively to reinforce classroom teaching and allow students to remind themselves how various features work after class. Because excel is something entirely new to most clients, this class attempts to build from week to week in a stepwise way.

This class assumes that students can:
    • Run programs in MS Windows
    • Open and save files in MS Word
    • Copy/paste
    • Type -- at least some
    • Use Bold, Italic, Underline, Font Color, and Highlighting on text in MS Word.

The class covers the following topics:
    • Day 1
      • What is a Spreadsheet?
      • What is Excel?
      • How does the User Interface (UI) compare with that of MS Word?
      • Spreadsheet vocabulary
      • Navigation/Data Entry
      • Basic Equations (6+3)
      • Auto Fill/Auto Complete
      • Exercises: Have students practice entering data and equations.
    • Day 2
      • Review day 1
      • Advanced Equations (equations with cell references)
      • Basic Functions
      • Moving Equations and Functions
      • Insert Function tool
      • Formatting Cells
      • Exercises: Book1 is a simple time sheet, book two is a fancier one that calculates how much was earned. Have the students recreate it from a printed copy.
    • Day 3
      • Review from day 2
      • Copy Paste
      • Page Management
      • Exercises: Class Survey -- look at a class survey with questions and get some statistics on answers
    • Day 4
      • "IF" statement
      • Project: Balance Sheet

All handouts and project files have been attached below. Most of the projects can simply be entered in by the students off of a printed version or a projection. In the case of the Class Survey exercises it may be beneficial to provide students with a copy that has none of the equations on it so that they don't get bogged down in so much typing.

No formal instructor notes are available for this class.
