This template helps students summarize the elements of an argument – claim, support, examples – and guides their reading and writing processes. Although somewhat prescriptive, it provides a useful structure for students to follow until they internalize the process.

We are going to play "point and counterpoint."

I will present a topic and your job as a group is to come up with as many reasons for the affirmative as possible. 
10 minutes to come up with support.
You will present one support and our opponents will have a chance to rebut your reasoning through understanding of logical fallacies or opposite reasoning. The team with the most reasons left standing wins that debate.

1. Illegal Immigration should be eliminated completely from the U.S. 
2. HB2 (Affirmative is for the bill/Negative is against the bill).
3. Raising Minimum Wage to $15.00 an hour.

Today we are beginning your final

This is due by May 26th.

Your job is to pick a speech of some form. This speech must come from the following criteria:
A speech from a Presidential Candidate from the last 28 years (approved by me)
A speech from a current political office holder (approved by me)

You will need to do the following things:
1. Research and explain the rhetorical background of this speech. Why as it given? When was it given? Who is the audience? What was the reception? Where was it presented? 
2. Rhetorical Analysis of your speech. Detail where Ethos is used. Detail where pathos is used. Detail where logos is used.
3. Rhetorical Analysis of logical fallacies utilized. Point out at least 3.
4. Include an arguable thesis. ie. President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was not pro-African American.

To help solidify the understanding of logical fallacy activity.

Get a partner (or do it Solo, that's fine too)

Create a Google Drive FOLDER titled "Your Name(s) - Logical Fallacies"
In this folder you need a visual representation (image) of each of the 13 logical fallacies. Rename each image the name of the logical fallacy it represents. 
Also create a document in this folder and in this document describing why these images represent this logical fallacy.

Finally, on this document, as a partnership, answer this question:

What does the casual acceptance of surrounding ourselves with fallacies say about us?
Remember that everything is an argument. Look for persuasive posters around the school. College posters trying to get you to go to school there. Look at how they are flawed in their persuasion.

1. Present the case 
        a. Who is the defendant?
        b. What are they accused of doing?
        c. What is the plea?
2. Prosecution Opening Statement (2 minutes)
3. Defense Opening Statement (2 minutes)
4. Prosecution Case (2 minutes min)
5. Defense Case (2 minutes min)
6. Closing statements if needed

A 75% voting in favor of the prosecution is needed for a Guilty verdict to be rendered.

So, you should have your opening statements planned out.

Next we want to present the evidence:

Since the burden of proof lies with the prosecution, the prosecution need to come up with at least 3 pieces of evidence to support their claim.  
Evidence includes:
1. Eyewitness testimony (clips or screen shots from the event)
2. Character witness (people saying things from the movie about the character)
3. Expert Testimony (people that are familiar with similar aspects of the case)

For the defense, you must anticipate these claims by being able to dispute them with:
1: Your own Eyewitness Testimony (clips or screen shots from the event)
2. Character witness (people saying positive things about the character)
3. Expert Testimony (people who are familiar with your character's situation)

Each of you need to prepare about 2 minutes of evidence.
Each piece of evidence should last 20 seconds each and presented on a Haiku Deck format (It is an app).

How to Haiku Deck.

It should look and sound like this:
1-20 seconds: Introduction 
21-40 seconds: Evidence 1
41-60 seconds: Evidence 2
60-80 seconds: Evidence 3
80-100 seconds: Rebut or Prebut your opponent
100-120 seconds: Conclusion

Today you need to get this prepared through research.

So by the end of class you need to have:
1. Your opening statement
2. Your 2 minutes of evidence blocked out.

Where to go:
1. Paint a picture of your character. Describe them as someone that could or could not commit this crime.
2. Describe the situation. Describe it as one that is either possible or impossible for there to be a crime committed
3. Describe the motive. Describe this as something that could or could not lead to them committing a crime.
4. Describe a moral imperative of the jury.
5. Begin with a hook and tie it in to the end of your statement.
