(Amanda Kasun)The benefits of Fidgets:
Want to find a way to increase focus for your students? Research indicates that children with ADHD, Autism and actually all students can benefit from the use of fidgets to increase our alertness and focus. "We know that some activity can be disruptive to others, but we need to find ways to make it less conspicuous and to integrate socially appropriate ways of moving" according to Julie Schweitzer, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the MIND Institute at the University of California, Davis. That is where the beauty of fidgets comes in.

(Amanda Kasun)De-Escalation Techniques:
How do you calm a student when he or she becomes emotionally unstable? With the integration of students with a variety of ability levels and disabilities in the mainstream classroom, it is more common for a classroom teacher to have to quickly calm an unstable student. Being able to intervene quickly can keep a situation from escalating to dangerous levels.

In addition to all the Christmas gifts Santa left under the tree, one of the best was opening the Marietta
Times and looking at the Student Artists' NIE Calendar. The Calendar features High School student artists
in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Fort Frye was very well represented! It started with senior Kayla Dye on the front
cover (yes....FRONT COVER) with her "Rainy Days" and Mondays painting. On April, Sophomore Kasey
Buchanan is featured with a full page painting of a little boy on a bench. On August, Sophomore Damien
Posey has his "Weather" painting. Turn to September and you will see Senior Jody Targonski and her
"Falling for Autumn" Painting. Then on one of the back pages, Sophomore Lexy Harlow shows her
"Weather Vane" Painting. Walk into the Art room at FFHS and you will see more very talented students.
Behind these very talented student Artists, is a very dedicated, passionate, and talented teacher.
Thank you Kathy Allen-Bidwell for installing the love of Art in our students and helping them develop
their abilities!
