About the Department

As a key component to student achievement, the Counseling Department is designed to address the academic, personal/social, and career needs of students. Throughout a student’s four high school years, your student’s school counselor, in collaboration with others, will assist students with career planning tailored for each developmental level. These include the following elements:

  • Discuss transition needs from middle to high school (9)

  • Review 4-year plan and portfolio started in 8th grade (9)

  • Advise and schedule appropriate course selections to meet post-secondary goals (9-12)

  • Meet with a high school counselor for an individual Academic and Career Planning (ACP) conference to design, adapt, and enhance the individual needs of the student (9 & 11)

  • Assist in the delivery of career information, advisement, planning via classroom presentations, and portfolio development in Financial, Academic, and Career Connections (FACC) course (11)

  • Provide exploratory resources to students regarding academic and career options to guide informed decision-making (9-12)

  • Prepare, facilitate, and interpret all pertinent test data including college entrance testing (9-11)

  • Assist in applying for college, technical college, military enlistment, and other post-secondary options (12)

  • Provide financial aid resources to students and families (12)

  • Meet with students and families as needed to provide support, guidance, and encouragement to help students have a successful and enriching high school experience (9-12)

ABOUT OUR COUNSELORS

Ms. Shannon Mooney (A-K)

I am the counseling department chairperson and I have been a school counselor in the district for over 20 years. I have earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and Human Services from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Marquette University. In addition, I am a trained AVID advisor and have earned additional certifications as an ADHD services provider and in Career Development Facilitation. Over my tenure in the district, I have been involved in multiple meaningful endeavors including the design and development of universal Academic and Career Planning (ACP) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for all students in grades 9-12. As the secondary PLC leader, I facilitate a team of educators to design and implement both universal and intervention programming.

Some of my interests include coaching students in strategies to support executive function by providing instruction in brain-based learning and study skills. I aim to bring high-quality research-based skills to JHS and to lead both students and educators in developing systems to support comprehension and retention. Accessibility to post-secondary options for all students and facilitating career and opportunity knowledge is a priority in my role. By helping all students identify their individual strengths, navigate challenges, and develop skills, students are better equipped to achieve both academic and personal success.

Ms. Amanda Wallace (L-Z)

I have been a high school counselor for 8 years. I have a Bachelors Degree in Psychology and a Masters in Counseling, both from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. My philosophy of education is student-centered: all students are capable of achieving at high levels with personalized supports. It is my goal to help students leave high school with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for success in their postsecondary decisions. In my time as a counselor, I have developed passions for work with multi-level systems of support, personalized learning, career exploration and development, and equity and cultural awareness.

On my own time, I love spending time with my family, reading, camping, hiking, and baking.
