Welcome Back!

I hope your winter break was a healthy, fun, and restful one.

We will be MAP testing when we return on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is very important for students to do their best and take their time as they navigate tests in Reading and Math.  As a reminder, some effective ways to improve tests scores include:
  • Get a good night's sleep every night - maybe even an earlier bedtime
  • Turn off all electronics (cell phone, IPad, computer, games) at least 2 hours before bedtime
  • Eat a good breakfast and keeping hydrated - helps to improve focus and energy
  • Read all directions, text selections, problems and answer choices
  • Take time to think through answer choices and do not rush

We will also begin our class novel entitled Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor. This Newberry Award winning novel is set in the South during the Great Depression and centers on an African-American family named the Logans who take pride in owning their own land. This moving and engrossing book follows their struggles, as seen through the eyes of the nine-year-old Cassie Logan, as the family faces racial injustice while maintaining their strength, hope, and dignity.

Reading homework will be assigned daily; students should write homework in their assignment notebooks. Also, please check the calendar for reading assignments and other homework.

*** In my File Cabinet, there is a link to the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry online. Click on the book cover, and you will be able to access the entire novel online. This will be especially helpful if materials are forgotten at school.
