09. Week of 10/23/17

Hi Parents and Guardians:

Here's what's going on in 6th Grade ELA this week:

1. Academic Vocab Test - This Friday, 10/27, the students will be taking a test on the 9 academic words we have studied so far.  The words include significant, benefit, procedure, source, context, concept, variable, analysis, and consistent.  All students should be bringing home their word packet, which contains definitions and other important information about the words, to study for at least 10 minutes each night.  You may want to encourage your child to make flash cards or to have a family member quiz him or her on the words.  The students will need to know the definitions as well as how to use the words in context. If any student has lost his or her packet, you can find the words in the file cabinet on my teacher page.

2. Independent Reading Reflection - The students will be completing a reflection on their independent reading habits during 1st quarter.  The document can be found on Google Classroom, and must be completed by Tuesday, 10/24.  As part of the reflection, the students will be setting goals and coming up with a plan to overcome challenges they have faced so far.  Please continue to help your students commit to a consistent routine for their nightly independent reading.  Students should be reading around 20-30 minutes, but if they aren't there yet, have them start small.  Just make sure they do some reading each night, and they can build up to 20 to 30 minutes.

3. Memoir Grades- All students will be given their rubrics with a grade for the final draft of the memoir by Wednesday.  Please sign and return the rubric by Friday to show you have seen the grade and feedback.

4. Literacy Night - WMS Family Literacy Night is next Thursday, 11/2.  Please join us for a fun evening to celebrate our love of books.  Students, parents and siblings are all welcome!  Free pie will be served to all who attend!  Please see the flyer for more information.

Thanks for all your support!  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a great rest of your week.
