05. Week of September 25, 2017

Hi Parents,

Here's what's going on in ELA this week:

1. Memoir Writing - The students have started drafting their narrative memoirs in class and will continue working on them over the next three weeks.  The students are typing their drafts directly into Google Docs.  While they will be working in class every day, they should also work on adding to and revising their draft at home as well.  The rubric for the memoir can be found in the File Cabinet.  We are reading memoirs in class as well so they students can see what a good memoir looks like and try out the techniques used by real authors.  Please ask your child to show you his/her writing, so you can see what he/she is working on and give a few suggestions.  This week, we are working on adding thoughts, dialogue and action to to show what happened in the memory instead of just telling.  The final draft, which will be due on Friday, 10/13, needs to be a minimum of 1.5 -3 pages typed.

2. Academic Vocabulary - The words this week are significant and benefit.

3. Plot review - During guided reading this week, the students will be reading stories and identifying the various elements of plot, which helps with summarizing.

4. Play permission slip - The 6th grade class will be attending a play by DePaul University on Thursday, 10/5.  Permission slips must be returned by this Thursday, 9/28.

5. Scholastic Book Order - September book orders are due this Wednesday.  Here is the link if you want to order online: https://orders.scholastic.com/GZNB6

Have a wonderful week, and please let me know if you have any questions.
