Community Bulletin Board

The seniors of American Falls Academy have built a "Good News" bulletin board that is between Kens and Rockland Pharmacy. The board notifies the public of positive events that are happening in our classrooms and schools that usually do not make the paper. Seniors from the Academy have been assigned to different schools and visit with teachers weekly to gather information for the board. It is the Academy's wish that this board will become a tradition for the posting of positive school news in the community. Information is changed every Wednesday; please stop by and read about the many wonderful things that are happening in our schools!

The current students are:
Hillcrest - Stephanie Wasson, Frank White
Intermediate - Oscar DonJuan, Jordan Montross
WTMS - Jozef Roberts, Hunter Campbell
HS -  Ignacio Fonseca, Dulce Gonzalez

First trimester student council in 6th grade raised $250 to donate to Power County Search and Rescue.  The 6th graders have been doing this since 2010.  It is a very worthy cause and allows them to give back to their community.

At the American Falls Intermediate School, the fourth grade students who have done their best in class this year got the opportunity to go the planetarium, and learn about the planets and the different stars and constellations. The students who were able to go had a fun time learning the new things.

Intermediate School
On Thursday October 22nd the 4th graders get to meet with the FFA students from the high school. They will learn about the agriculture that the FFA students have learned this year so far.

The Intermediate School 5th graders had a Tar War that taught the kids not to use tobacco. The winner of the Tar War was Destinee Henderson.

The Intermediate School teachers (along with all other teachers in the school district) have had several in-service training on teaching students how to write well organized paragraphs, topic sentences, and papers. All students across the district are learning this at their appropriate grade level and difficulty. This collaborative effort is creating amazing student writers in American falls.

I have had quite a few students coming in at lunch and after school to get their homework finished and their quizzes corrected so that they can improve their grades.

In Mr. Lance's biology class the students are generating their own understanding of ecology through research. After they completed the research assignments, they were responsible for teaching various concepts to their peers through a presentation, thus practicing their communication and teaching skills. The students have taken ownership of their education during this project and for those who put forth the required effort, they have gained substantial knowledge of ecological concepts. We believe that by teaching you learn, and this is how we try to develop our lessons here in biology class

William Thomas Middle School
Sixth graders came in to Mr. Smith’s classroom to have science concepts presented to them by the advanced science class.  This was “hands on” with everybody involved in it.

The 5th graders welcomed Jerry Davis to the Intermediate school. He showed them his awesome collection of petrified wood and fossils. The students enjoyed listening to and observing him about them. They were so excited about seeing the big stumps of petrified wood.

Hillcrest Elementary School
Music- Mrs. Bowman’s  kindergarteners are studying the opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Gian Carlo Menotti. It is about a little boy who is healed  miraculously when three kings stop by his home. He then goes with them, as they follow a brilliant star in search of one who will bring peace. Her first graders are preparing for their winter concert, which they will perform on December 19th. The second graders are hearing Englebert Humperdinck's opera, "Hansel und Gretel" in German, and the third graders will perform the musical revue "Interplanetary Jammin'" on November 18th.

Hillcrest Elementary School

In Mrs. Raya’s first grade classroom, the kids

are learning to handle being in school all

day, eating lunch in the cafeteria, enjoying 3

recesses, and becoming responsible for their

personal items. All of the first graders are trying

and succeeding at them. In the classroom they

are also working blending. This helps students

with reading and becoming good readers in the

#1 goal in first grade.
