AJCU Call to Action: Take a Stand for Justice

*Thank you to all those who have added your name to this Call to Action. At this time, we are no longer adding names to the Call.

BLACK lives matter, ALL lives matter, JUSTICE matters

For many years, Jesuit education has emphasized the importance of social justice, based on the biblical understanding of justice, a right relationship with God, others, self. The 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States (AJCU) build on a nearly 500 year old tradition of rigorous instruction that seeks to cultivate the “whole person in service for others.”

In just the past several months, the world has witnessed the deep pain and suffering occurring in Ferguson, New York, Cleveland and elsewhere. Our colleagues at Saint Louis University, a Jesuit institution only 12 miles south of Ferguson, have intimately experienced this pain. Events such as those in Ferguson could easily have taken place in San Jose, California, the South Side of Chicago, or northern Omaha. This reality reminds us that this is a time for solidarity among all members of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities and a time to remind the nation and the world who we are. We are committed to social justice: a right relationship.  To be in right relationship is to recognize that BLACK lives matter, ALL lives matter, JUSTICE matters.

The recent deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and other unarmed citizens are cause for extreme concern to us who seek right relationships. Whether intended or not, these events point to a much larger systemic inequality with racist implications that continue to exist in our nation and which communicate a lack of value for black life. The facts are sobering:

  • Young black males are 21 times more likely to be shot dead by police than their white counterparts. (usnews.com)

  • Black students are more than three times as likely to attend schools where fewer than 60 percent of teachers meet all state certification and licensure requirements. Latino students were twice as likely to attend such schools. (Department of Education)

  • In 2011, 23.7 percent of blacks held bachelor’s degrees compared with 41.4 percent of whites – a 17.7-point gap. Once enrolled in college, black males graduate at 33 percent compared to the national average of 57 percent (Data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center cited at EdSource)

  • In 2012, on average, only 16% of undergraduate students at Jesuit colleges and universities were American Indian, African Americans or Latinos/Latinas, compared to 32% of the U.S. population. Tenure-track faculty on our campuses are even less representative of national demographics (independent analysis from IPEDS data at nces.ed.gov)

In this year, when we commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Jesuit and lay martyrs of the University of Central America in El Salvador, we are summoned to live out a distinct vision of higher education: one which, in the words of martyr Ignacio Ellacuría, recognizes that “a university is inescapably a social force: it must transform and enlighten the society in which it lives” (Santa Clara Commencement, 1982).  As members of Jesuit institutions bound by a common purpose and driven by a shared responsibility to advance justice and serve our most marginalized communities, we must continue to ask:

  • What more can we do to combat the type of institutional oppression and racism that devalues the existence of people of color and the poor?

  • What messages can we share with our own communities of color on our own campuses?

  • What advocacy can we provide for the promotion of justice, including the elimination of systematic forms of racism?

  • What support can we show to Saint Louis University and their neighboring communities?

  • What can we do to call for the healing of our nation?

As University leaders engaged in the Jesuit-mission we believe it is important to communicate: BLACK lives matter, ALL lives matter, JUSTICE matters. As diversity, inclusion, and multicultural affairs administrators at Jesuit colleges and universities, the AJCU Conference on Diversity and Equity (CDE) calls on all leaders of our campuses to: (1) organize and/or participate in a Moral Monday event on or around January 19, 2015, the holiday reserved to celebrate the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., on your campus or partnering with other ACJU campuses; (2) encourage our Presidents and other senior leaders to consider sending delegates to support our colleagues at Saint Louis University during the campus's MLK Day or other related events; and (3) add your name to this document and share this statement with your campus community.*

This is an opportunity to firmly affirm that we believe that BLACK lives matter, ALL lives matter, JUSTICE matters! To stand for justice is to take an important first step toward the healing of our nation. To stand for justice at Saint Louis University or on the other Jesuit campuses is an important first step toward being in right relationship. To stand for justice is both a powerful and peaceful step toward that satisfying day when “justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”
