LANGUAGE ARTS MRS. ABRAMSON
GRADE 6
READING- This year students will be reading a variety of classic age appropriate novels.
VOCABULARY WORKSHOP- This is an auxiliary program promoting a strong foundation in vocabulary.
WRITING-Students will be regularly writing, learning the writing process. They will be working on book reports, research writing, persuasive writing, narratives and poetry.
We will be incorporating the proper use of grammar in their writing. Writing mechanics involves the parts and types of sentences. We will be working on writing descriptively; grammar skills include use of adjectives, adverbs, use of a variety of sentence types and exploring "voice" in their writing.
Students will also be learning to properly answer essay questions, and summarizing in conjunction with their reading story,with a focus on understanding main ideas, and on organizing details in a clear, concise manner.

READING- - This year we are reading ad responding to a variety of classic grade appropriate novels.
VOCABULARY WORKSHOP- This is an auxiliary program of stories and skills to enhance the student's vocabulary. We will be doing a unit every 2 weeks.
WRITING - The fifth and sixth graders will be writing on a regular basis. They will be learning the writing process, learning to construct proper sentences, and appropriate paragraph structure. They will be writing book reports, personal narratives, research,"How To" pieces of writing, opinions, descriptive stories, and poetry.
We will incorporate proper use of grammar mechanics.
Their writing, in response to the novels, will be personal narrative, sequencing events, and focus on word choice in responding to the reading.

Small, personal white board (no larger than 11” x 14”)

12 Inch ruler (than has both inch and cm measurements)
1 inexpensive, basic calculator

Small, sturdy tote bag to use as a travel bag
GRADES 5 AND 6 SPELLING BEE
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS ARE POSTED EVERY DAY ON THE HOMEWORK BOARDS FOUND IN EACH OF THE FIFTH AND SIXTH GRADE CLASSROOMS. EACH STUDENT HAS BEEN GIVEN AN ASSIGNMENT BOOK, AND TIME AT THE END OF EACH CLASS TO WRITE ASSIGNMENTS AT THE END OF THE DAY. DON'T LEAVE SCHOOL WITHOUT IT!
