The students will read and understand Chapter 5, "Advice From A Caterpillar," regarding the plot: Alice encounters the Caterpillar who challenges her with questions about her identity which she can't answer; she gets annoyed and walks away; he calls her back asking her to recite her lessons; she gets it all wrong again, he then tells her how each side of the mushroom he's sitting on can change her size; she tries this and grows so tall that she is above the tree line, and a pigeon mistakes her for a serpent out to steal her eggs; finally remembering that she still has some mushroom in her hand, she eats some and grows smaller again, and the themes: identity and confusion, making sense of nonsense, patience

Objective: The students will read and understand Chapter 4, "The Rabbit Sends In a Little Bill," regarding the plot: Alice wanders around and meets up with the White Rabbit who mistakes her for his maid and orders her to fetch his gloves and fan; she goes into his house and finds another "Drink Me" bottle and drinks it. She grows enormously large then and is stuck in his house with her foot up the chimney and her arm out the window; The Rabbit and some friends think she is a monster and try various ways to remove her; they finally throw pebbles at her which turn into cakes which she eats and they shrink her; she runs away from the angry mob, finds a giant puppy and a mushroom plant, and the themes: class systems, irrational behaviors, the confusion of growing up, and will identify the figurative language in the chapter

Objectives: The students will read Chapter 15, "Nobody Gets The Fleece," regarding the plot:   They have reached the home of the Cyclops, which is.

quite beautiful, and they can sense the power of the Fleece in the air. It is hanging on an oak tree among several dozen sheep. They can't just take it because the sheep are canivorous. They see another lifeboat, and Percy hopes that Tyson might still be alive. They climb up the cliff and hear Clarisse fighting with the Cyclops. Grover convinces Polyphemus not to eat him yet, but wait for a recipe. Polyphemus decides he will marry Clarisse instead. Annabeth decides that they should use trickery, wearing her invisibility cap. Annabeth distracts Polyphemus by introducing herself as Nobody. Polyphemus becomes furious and states that he remembers her, throwing the boulder in front of his cave in her general direction. She escapes, and he begins to chase her voice down the hill. Percy hops off of his sheep escort and heads to free Grover and Clarisse. All of a sudden there’s an explosion, and they hear Annabeth scream. Tyson shows up and leads the sheep away so Percy can take the fleece. Annabeth is hurt, so they drape the fleece over her. They escape, but Polyphemus is still after them.

Percy still has the bottle of multivitamins, as well as Riptide. Annabeth tells him the prophecy: the next child of the Big Three who lives to sixteen will be a dangerous weapon, as they will make a decision that either saves or destroys Olympus. They land on a beautiful island, where a lady with a clipboard waits for them. They also notice different ships are in port. The building seems to be a spa., and it is beautiful, but there are only young women present. Percy sees a gorgeous woman sitting at the loom who introduces herself as C.C. She tells Percy and Annabeth that they both need makeovers, and Annabeth is taken away. C.C. has a mirror that shows Percyhow he would look without any imperfections, and he decides he wants her makeover. He drinks something that turns him into a guinea pig, and CC places him in a cage with other guinea pigs. CC admits she is a sorceress and offers to make Annabeth one also. Annabeth realizes that Percy is a guinea pig so she dumps the multivitamins in the cage, and all the guinea pigs turn back into men and escape. Percy and Annabeth sail out of Blackbeard's family ship, Queen Anne’s Revenge. The students will identify the figurative language in the chapter.

Percy realizes that someone other than Hades stole both the master bolt and the helm of darkness and framed Percy because his dad is Poseidon: Ares arrives on his motorcycle with a baseball bat, waiting for them. Percy accuses him of stealing the helm of darkness and the master bolt. Ares tells him he got someone else to steal the symbols of power, but he won't say who. He tells Percy that he's messing up his strategy for starting a war: Percy was supposed to die, angering Poseidon. Hades is supposed to take Zeus's master bolt, so Zeus would get mad at him. Ares has Hades' master bolt. The backpack Ares gave them in Denver was enchanted. Ares is momentarily distracted. Percy guesses that Ares isn't behind most of this. Percy guesses that Ares is taking orders from the voice in the pit, in Tartarus. to do. Ares sets a wild boar on Percy, but Percy lops its horn off and makes a wave crash upon it and pull it into the ocean. Ares and Percy start fighting one-on-one. Percy tries to use his sea powers to his advantage, but Ares makes this hard, keeping Percy away from the water. The police arrive in huge numbers. Ares sets their police cars on fire, and the crowd disperses. Finally, Percy backs into the water, telling the waves to hold and build pressure. Which they do. Then Percy releases a huge wave on Ares's head, throwing him off kilter. Percy stabs Riptide into Ares's ankle, causing his golden blood (ichor) to flow. The Furies arrive on the scene They realize that Percy is not the thief after all. Percy gives them the helm of darkness and asks them to return it to Hades. Percy, Annabeth and Grover decide they'll have to fly back to New York in order to make their deadline. That means flying through Zeus's territory, and the themes: betrayal, courage, restoration, as well as identifying the literary devices in the chapter
