Allianz Cumann na mBunscoil Girls football final

posted Oct 26, 2017, 2:29 PM by Owen Breslin   [ updated Oct 26, 2017, 2:31 PM ]

Our girls football team took on Ballinamere in the final of the Allianz Offaly Cumann na mBunscoil competition last Wed. The girls put in a huge effort but unfortunately it was not to be their day. Congratulations to Ballinamere on their win. We are exceptionally proud of the way the Killeigh girls fought all the way to the end.
We would like to thank all of our supporters and everyone who helped out with the team this year.
We also wish to thank Offaly Cuman na mBunscoil for running such an enjoyable finals day.
The following is a match report sent to us by Offaly Cuman na mBunscoil and written by Kevin Egan.

ALLIANZ CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL GIRLS GROUP B FINAL

Kevin Egan

Ballinamere NS 4-8 (16)    Killeigh NS    0-5 (5)

A fantastic afternoon’s action from the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol finals ended in glory for the girls of Ballinamere National School as they overcame their counterparts from Killeigh to win the girls’ group B cup.

Goals proved crucial in this contest but while Killeigh failed to find the Ballinamere net at any stage, that wasn’t due to any attacking shortcomings on their part – instead they simply ran into a wonderful opponent in Lily Plunkett, who must surely have earned the Player of the Match title with a series of crucial interventions.

She was particularly prominent in the second half when players like Mollie Kelly, Tara Cleary, Jane Murray and Katelyn Flannelly Daly all drove at the Ballinamere defence with real pace and intent, but just couldn’t find a way past the winning goalkeeper.

Killeigh certainly had to chase the lead after Ballinamere dominated the first half of the contest, building up a 2-5 to 0-1 interval lead.

The sides traded early points before goals from Jane Maher and Niamh Galvin put distance between the sides, with Anna Wyer also heavily involved, picking off two superb points just before half time.

Saorah Doyle showed great tactical acumen with some good sweeping play while Blathnaid Egan earned some crucial turnovers to keep Killeigh at bay.

Further goals from Julia Slattery and Jane Maher stretched the lead but it was a rejuvenated and energetic Killeigh side that took to the field after half time, and they produced some superb attacking play, moving the ball quickly. Nothing they did found a way past Lily Plunkett however, who ensured that Ballinamere retained their healthy lead right up to the final whistle.

Ballinamere NS: Lily Plunkett, Bláthnaid Egan, Emma Buggy, Hannah Buggy, Naoise McDonald, Ruby Plunkett, Saorah Doyle (0-1f), Niamh Galvin (1-1), Amy McGreal, Niamh Keyes (0-1), Jane Maher (2-0), Julia Slattery (1-1), Anna Wyer (0-4).

Subs: Hannah Walsh, Susan Guiney, Grace Doyle, Áine Byrne, Áine Varley, Orlaith Garvey, Rachel Donegan, Niamh Garvey, Emily Walsh, Amelie Guiney, Eve Crowley, Florrie Brickland, Shannan Molloy, Grace McNally

Killeigh: Jennifer Crilly, Sadhbh Kelly, Hannah Troy, Lauryn O’ Reilly, Olivia Dempsey, Ava Spollen, Jane Murray (0-1), Tara Cleary (0-1), Sarah Corcoran, Katelyn Flannelly Daly (0-1), Mollie Kelly (0-1), Aoife Greene, Katie Tuite (0-1).

Subs: Katie Gowing, Alannah Kelly, Mia Malone, Julia Hooper, Róisín Lally, Kayla Dunne, Sinéad Walsh, Caoimhe O’Toole, Maeve Lally, Tanya Daly, Katie Deverell, Aisling Nunan, Hannah Doyle, Charlotte MacDonnell, Skaiste Slezeviciene, Sinéad Nunan, Grace Gowing, Emily Stack
