  • Back in the Routine! After a couple of days off, it’s been a great week returning to our first grade routine!  We focused on the "ar" sound.  We call the "r" a "bossy "r."  We also learned that before you add an –ed or –ing ending to a word that ends with a vowel-consonant, you must double the consonant before adding the ending.  In reading, we read "Frog and Toad Together:  The Garden."  We learned all about author’s purpose.  Ask your child if the purpose of “Frog and Toad” was to inform or entertain.  Math was full of subtraction strategies, counting on, counting back, and breaking apart a 10.  In science, we learned about plant parts and the structure and function ...

  • Welcome Back! In reading this week, our main story was A Class Pet.  Our reading skill we focused on was identifying facts and opinions.  For phonics, we learned r-controlled or, ore and words that end in –es.  Please remember to fill out the reading log each night.  THANK YOU!   In math we have been working on place value.  We used base ten blocks to show numbers and solve riddles.  We also learned greater than and less than.    We have added subtraction fluency for the third quarter report card.  Please practice subtraction facts daily.  Here is a great website to help with all first grade math skills!     http://www.abcya.com/first_grade_computers.htm#numbers-cat In English, we learned a ...

  • Easing Back Into It This week in Reading & Math we reviewed multiple skills, strategies and First Grade Standards that we’ve already been working on. Some of these things include but are not limited to; contractions, compound words, beginning & ending digraphs, true & false, adding/subtracting, and word problems. In Reading, continue to read each night with your kiddo. Please log what you read on the back of your child’s behavior log letting us know that you guys are reading at home.   • T'was the Week Before Christmas What We’re Learning! In reading this week, our main story was Ruby in Her Own Time, and we worked on comparing and contrasting with a duck craftivity.  We also discussed the Amazing words attempt, time line, flatter, lovely, event, famous, correct, and common.  The phonics skills were the consonant patterns –ng and –nk and compound words.  We even made a penguin craftivity that decomposed a compound word!  Please continue to read the paper books and regular books at home with your child each night, practice these skills, and fill out the reading log in the binder.  Thanks!   • It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! In reading this week, our main story was A Place to Play.  Our reading skill we focused on was sequencing the events of the story and summarizing.  For phonics, we learned the Syllable Pattern CV (ex: hi, go, me, so, be) and Vowel Sounds of y (ex: by, try, cry, sunny, lucky, silly).  Please remember to fill out the reading log each night.  THANK YOU!   In Math, we have been working on adding three numbers.  We learned how to find a sum of 10 and then add the third number.  Please continue to work on addition and subtraction facts!  Addition facts to 10 and doubles should be mastered by the end of 2nd quarter.   In English, we have been ...
