Pick a hook
Select an exciting, enticing event or aspect of the book to focus on in the trailer.
Don't explain the whole plot or present all the characters. One conflict or one gripping event is enough to hook a reader.
Pick a point of view
Decide if your script will be written in first or third person.
First person: "I blew down the house."
Third person: "The wolf blew down the house."
Write the script
Look for words in your brainstorming list to include in the script.
Stick to strong verbs and specific nouns.
Limit use of adjectives and adverbs.
The first sentence should be short.
Sometimes it is helpful to write several versions of your script. Then pick the one you like the best or maybe parts of a couple versions will come together to make the final script.
End with mystery or unknown to entice the viewer to read the book.
Script should be 5-10 sentences and take no more than 60 seconds to read.
Read each script aloud to yourself. Reading aloud will help you to...
Locate grammar, punctuation and spelling errors to be corrected.
Identify strong phrases or words that work very well.
Identify edits you want to make before you select your final script.
Three Little Pigs Example Scripts - I wrote 4 versions and chose version 4 as the version I would use.
Version 1: The wolf destroyed my house. I built my house of straw and it looked really cool when I was done. It took a long time to figure out how to build it. Then the big, bad wolf blew down my house. Who will he attack next?
Version 2: The pig’s house fell down because the wolf blew it down. The little pig was so proud of his house, but the wolf finished it off. There are two other little pigs with houses. Can the wolf blow down their houses?
Version 3: I blew his house to smithereens. That little pig thought he was such a great builder but his straw house was no match for my lungs. Now it’s time to look for more lousy houses that need obliterated. Will your house be next?
Version 3 changed to 3rd person: The wolf blew his house to smithereens. That little pig thought he was such a great builder but the pig’s straw house was no match for the wolf’s lungs. Now it’s time for the wolf to look for more lousy houses that need obliterated. Which house will be next?
Version 4: He obliterated my house. I am a master weaver of straw. The house I created was exquisite and one of a kind. It took me years to design and construct. Then the wolf stole into town and huffed and puffed and blew it to smithereens. Now he’s roaming our town. Who will be his next victim?
