  • Language Arts/Reading (65 minutes)
  • Language Arts/Writing (2 hours)
  • Social Studies (70 minutes)
  • Science (80 minutes)
  • Mathematics (90 minutes)
All tests consist of at least 50 multiple choice questions, and the Writing test includes an essay.

Can I use a calculator?

Yes, a calculator is available for the math test. Students should have completed at least Basic Algebra in order to successfully complete the test.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost for HiSET pre-testing, testing or prep classes, or for adult diploma classes in Maine as the DOE subsidizes testing and preparation.

How will I know if I need a preparation class?

After your Intake Appointment, candidates will take the five official pre-tests, prior to scheduling actual HiSET testing. If pre-testing indicates further preparation is needed, free test prep classes are available Wednesday evenings at Scarborough Adult Learning Center.
