Themes that flow from the period associated with the Mexican-American War are that both America and Mexico were fighting to form their identities as nations. While Mexico was recently emerging from a period of warring for its independence and was struggling to manage its expansive territories, the US was attempting to establish itself as a nation. Polk declared war before it was passed in congress and supported slavery. The outcome of the war had repercussions that rippled through public policy both over time and location.
