Advisory

"The ability to honestly and quietly reflect on one's life is one of the most powerful tools for personal growth."
- Richard Carlson

What is Advisory?

Advisory is a place where we create a safe and respectful environment in which to promote student self-reflection that will engage students as active and self-directed learners.

All students SBHS are enrolled in Advisory. Each group consists of about a dozen students and an advisor. The advisor is a staff member at SBHS. Advisory meets every Thursday and Friday during FACE Time. During this time, the group will do anything from group-building activities, to discussion of current events, to working on a student's' portfolio.

Examples of completed sophomore portfolios can be seen here:
Or, have a look at the portfolio that Mr. Hagstrom created as an example. It is awesome, just like him!

What happens at the end of the year?

During PLP Meetings for freshmen and Exhibitions for sophomores, students meet with their advisor, parents, and other guests to have a conversation about their progress throughout the year. These presentations are based on the students’ portfolios, which they build during the course of the year.

Why are we doing all of this?

Advisory at South Burlington High School is set up to focus on developing a meaningful relationship between advisor and student, and to guide students through the process of self-reflection and future planning. Through advisory, we hope that students will:
  • develop a meaningful connection with advisors
  • take time to be thoughtful
  • become well-informed designers of own education
  • know and connect to the SBHS Mission Statement
  • look deeper into the reflective process through the end of the end of the year meetings
