A person who is at least eighteen years of age interested in a monastic vocation to Newark Abbey may contact the Vocation Director, who will invite him to make several brief visits to the Abbey. Normally the first visit is for an afternoon including a brief tour followed by 5:00 p.m. community mass, 6:00 supper and 7:00 vespers.

Over time an inquirer may come for overnight visits, weekends and then for longer stays in order to discern his vocation.

Overnight visits require a letter of recommendation.

Before acceptance to candidacy, men interested in monasticism should have lived on their own, held a job, paid bills, dated, and in general have developed a good sense of a responsible adult living.

College-aged students who think they might be called to the monastic life, are encouraged to visit the monastery, and explore the possibility of life as a monk of Newark Abbey.
