7th Grade
Students are studying short stories. During this unit, students are learning to summarize, including a strategy for completing a summary. They are learning to analyze a literary text for its elements, such as internal conflict, character motivation, and setting. A primary focus is for students to understand how character development is affected by other parts of literary text. Finally, students are expanding their vocabularies through learning Greek and Latin root words and words that contain the roots. This unit addresses the following Common Core State Standards:
  • Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text
  • Analyze how elements of a story interact
  • Use words, phrases, and clauses to create cohesion and clarify the relationships among the claim, reasons, and evidence
  • Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence
  • Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development, organization, and style are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience
  • With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, and rewriting
  • Use technology to produce and publish writing, as well as to interact and collaborate with others
  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing
  • Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing
  • Determine or clarify the meanings of unknown and multiple-meaning words
