Lebanon High School
Field Trip to the UNH InterOperability Laboratory
November 13, 2014
The Nerd Herd traveled to Durham, home of the main campus of the University of New Hampshire, to visit the UNH InterOperability Laboratory (IOL). At the IOL, several high school students are selected for paid internships to learn how network and data communications devices are tested. Many successful engineers have benefited from training experiences at the IOL. The testing that takes place there helps provide quality assurance for when products reach the marketplace, and helps ensure that products from different vendors will be compatible.
Students were given a full tour of the IOL facilities - then, the task of making a circuit. Instructions did introduce the parts and general connections, but students still had to figure out how to get a darkness sensor to allow a bulb to light.
