May 26, 2017

Dear Parents,

No Lions and no Tigers, but plenty of Bears were the topic of discussions with Ben Kilham, naturalist and bear specialist from Lyme NH, who came to Cornish this week and shared all kinds of fascinating information about Squirty, Yoda, Curls and others of the 150 orphaned bears he has raised.  Having watched one of his educational videos, or read books pertaining to bears, our students asked some great questions and some made sure to get an autograph before he left: ‘What’s the scariest moment you ever had when you encountered one?’ ‘How do your bears get their names?’  Thanks to the Enrichment Committee and CCPTO for making his visit possible!

Coming up Soon:

  • Tuesday May 30:  Grades 1, 2, 7 & 8 will be traveling to and participating in the Memorial Day service in Cornish Flat from 10-12 noon
  • Friday June 2: The Science Recycling Regatta will take place in the morning; our last Student of the Month assembly is at 2pm.  Upper Wing students: please bring in recyclables early this week.  For the Regatta, students should bring an extra pair of socks or water proof shoes, tick-proof clothing &/or bug spray.
  • Wednesday June 7:  CCPTO meeting in the Library, 7:00 pm
  • June 7-8-9:  8th Grade Trip to Washington DC.  It’s going to be an amazing time for our students!  Thanks to all those who have helped to make this trip a reality.

Looking ahead to the end of the school year:

  • Food Drive:  Week of June 12-16.  (See flier for details, sent home with hard copy of this letter.)
  • Saturday June 17:  8th grade Graduation at St. Gaudens1:00 pm.  All are invited to attend!
  • Monday June 19:  School Board Meeting at 6:30 pm in the Library.
  • Tuesday June 20:  All-School field trip to Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS).  Students will visit several display areas, walk the local trail, engage in some teacher-generated activities and enjoy the raptor bird demonstrations before having lunch there and traveling back to school.
  • Wednesday June 21:  Green-White Field Day.  Please send children with the following items to make their day optimal:  bug spray, a water bottle, sun screen and an extra white t-shirt for the tie-dye station.

A couple reminders:  Please keep in mind that we have no supervision available at school prior to the normal bus drop-off time (about 8 am). Our staff are often in meetings or holding parent conferences.  Students may come in to the cafeteria for breakfast beginning at 7:50 am.  Also, if there has been a recent change at home which may affect your children at school, please notify their homeroom teacher so we can adjust and check in with them as needed. Have a safe and restful Memorial Day weekend;

Warmest regards,
