READ ACROSS AMERICA CELEBRATION  

February 24th – March 23rd, 2018

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH -


The DCS SPRING READING CHALLENGE!  

The DCS Spring Reading Challenge will last 4 weeks (Feb. 24th - Mar. 23rd).  If DCS students and staff read 10,000 books,  ALL CLASSES WILL WIN AN EXTRA 45 MINUTES OF RECESS! Students will be asked to track the number of books read over vacation and turn their signed tracking slip into their teacher on Monday, March 5th.  


Please see the attached sheet to know what can count as a book read!  The daily tally of books read will be displayed on the screen in the lobby.  Teachers will submit daily book counts through Google, so be sure to help your younger children remember their book count in the morning!


Monday, March 5TH –

The CAT IN THE HAT greets our students at the bus in the morning!

                     

TRIVIA CONTEST  begins and continues each day this week! Trivia will be based on Dr. Seuss and Theo LeSieg this year.  A group of 6th and 7th graders will develop the questions. The class that answers the trivia question correctly each morning receives a prize!


MONDAY, MARCH 5TH - FRIDAY, MARCH 9TH –

GUEST READERS

Mrs. Schonwald, our librarian, will organize a fabulous guest reader for each library class! Guest

Readers in the past have included the Police Chief, Town Librarian, Deerfield Recreation Department Director, and many others.


CAUGHT YA READING

Teachers will receive an initial packet of “Caught Ya” Reading cards.  When teachers CATCH students reading (in lieu of talking, wasting time etc.), they will give the student a CAUGHT YA READING card.  Students should sign their name and class to the back of the card and deposit it in the box in the library. EACH DAY, March 5th – March 9th, we will pick names at the K-3 and 4-8 levels. Winners will get to come to the library to choose a free book to keep!


FRIDAY, MARCH 9th - SEUSSICAL DAY- Celebrate Dr. Seuss!!  Crazy Hair.  Crazy Socks. How crazy do you feel?  Dress as a Dr. Seuss character or just get out your crazy clothes.


FRIDAY, MARCH 9th - Staff spelling bee!  Will your teacher be the QUEEN BEE?


MARCH 5TH-MARCH 9TH

THE CAFETERIA WILL BE FEATURING STORY-RELATED FOOD!




MARCH 5th-23rd -

HAVE A GOOD BOOK ON HAND FOR DROP EVERYTHING AND READ HAPPENING TWICE A WEEK THROUGH MARCH 23RD!


THURSDAY, MARCH 15th and TUESDAY, MARCH 20th


AFTER SCHOOL READ INs!

Each year the AFTER SCHOOL READ INs are extremely popular! Students must have permission slips to attend (attached).  Snacks will be provided.  Books read will count toward our all-school reading goal.


Hosted by Mrs. Schonwald (Librarian), Mrs. Davis, Mrs. McGovern and Mr. Ghoting (Reading Specialists) and volunteer teachers in the library, students are invited to come with pillows and blankets to enjoy some reading time together.  Snacks will be served from 2:30-2:45 and reading time will be from 2:45-3:30. Pickup will be in the Library at 3:30.


THURSDAY, MARCH 15TH GRADES 1-2 may attend an After School READ IN.  Kindergarteners may attend WITH PARENTS.  (Sorry.  We have so many kids each year and Kinders just have a hard time without constant adult interaction.)


GRADES 6 THROUGH 8 may attend on Thursday, March 15th as well and choose between reading in Mrs. Davies’ room or reading to the younger students in the library.


TUESDAY, MARCH 20TH - GRADES 3-5 may attend an After School READ IN


FRIDAY, MARCH 16TH-GRADES K-5

      It's a VOCABULARY SHOWCASE!

Make a great vocabulary word come to life!  Students are invited to design a costume that illustrates a vocabulary word. The costume should be brought to school on Friday, March 16th for a vocabulary parade! You can find examples of this on PINTEREST. Just search “Vocabulary Parade Board” or “Deb Frasier Vocabulary Parade” for great ideas!
