Counselors:

·      work with individuals and groups

·      Facilitate better interpersonal relationships

·      Promote positive attitudes and choices

·      Aide teachers and parents in helping students

·      Coordinate efforts with other school specialists and outside agencies

·      Participate in curriculum development and school wide programming

·      Provide secondary school information and help with the participation process

·      Coordinate referrals for Special Education services/Child Study Team

·      Establish and case manage 504 plans

·      Supervise master’s level student interns

 
The purpose of individual counseling, group meetings and classroom Guidance is:

·      to help students develop self-understanding and social skills

·      to encourage students to recognize and make the best use of their capabilities

·      to provide opportunities for students to feel successful

·      to give students an opportunity to talk about educational and personal –social concerns

·      to encourage students to recognize, understand and work through learning difficulties

·      to help students better adjust  to school and home environments, which may include counseling through crisis and loss

·      to develop student’s awareness of the world of work

·      to teach students the decision making/problem solving process and develop communication skills

·      to assist students in personal goal setting

·      to help students think about options for secondary education

·      to teach students anger management /conflict resolution skills
