Writers' Workshop

Students participate in Writers' Workshop to develop the ability to express their ideas and thoughts through words and pictures. The act of writing contains two distinct parts: the writing process and writing mechanics.

The Writing Process

The writing process focuses on the ability to express thoughts, opinions and ideas through written language. Some of the writing units your child may engage in during the school year are:

  • Personal Narrative
  • How-To Texts
  • Expository Text: fact writing, autobiography
  • Persuasive Writing
  • Poetry
  • Letter Writing
  • Response to Literature

Writing Mechanics

The mechanics of writing is the application of the standard rules of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Some of the skills students will develop throughout the year are:

  • Using a capital letter to start a sentence
  • Using spaces between words
  • Using punctuation to end sentences (. ? !)
  • Using punctuation within sentences
  • Develop the ability to apply rules and patterns of conventional spelling
