Goals and Objectives of Integrated English:

  1. Develop an academic vocabulary, learning multiple meanings of words, prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
  2. Understand and use writing strategies for organization and development of thoughts.
  3. Use higher order thinking skills to process what is already known to new information gained through reading a variety of genres.
  4. Understand the research process and investigate an area of concern/interest.
  5. Think critically on current events and issues raised through reading novels, articles, and other texts.
  6. Read independently for a variety of purposes.
  7. Improve one’s fluency through phonemic awareness and practice.
  8. Develop strong comprehension strategies (SQ3R).
  9. Demonstrate strong communication skills, whether speaking, listening, viewing, writing, reading, or using technology.

Instructional Materials:

Students will be assigned a Language Interactive Textbook. If the interactive textbook is lost, it must be replaced. Students are free to borrow my personal reading books from my library; however, they will be responsible for replacement costs if the book is lost or damaged. Students are responsible to take care of all school materials.

Student Materials: (To be brought to school everyday)

· Journal (kept in class)

· Pens and pencils

· Homework folder with assignments (Posted on Googleclassroom)

· Independent or class novels

Note: Students will have an in-school folder to organize and save their work.

Academic:

Upon Successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify strategies for reading and comprehending literary genres. (1,3)

2. Formulate questions, compare and contrast, determine relevant information, paraphrase and summarize, and think critically about information. (1,3,4,7)

3. Understand the writing process; use prewriting strategies, develop a thesis and support and develop the thesis for a variety of writing tasks. (3)

4. Identify key literacy vocabulary (For example: hyperbole, alliteration, simile, metaphor, allusion, personification) (3)

5. Students will improve their command of appropriate English conventions: grammar, syntax, and diction. (1,3)

6. Communicate their understanding of ideas, as well as other perspectives and work collaboratively with others. (2)

Social:

1. Students will be respectful members of the EHS community. (1,2,3,4,5)

2. Students are expected to work to their fullest potential: motivated, responsive and focused. (2)

2. Students are responsible for upholding the standards of the classroom, including respect for school property, respect for self, punctuality and participation. (1,2,3,4,5)

Civic:

Students will show ethical and lawful behavior. (1)

Students will be responsible citizens. (2)

Students will work on their team leadership skills. (3)

Teacher Responsibility:

Arrangements can be made for extra help before, during, or after school. Student should ask for help when needed.

Grading: (Grading Scale A+ through F, follows the EHS student handbook, and Pass/Fail for the extended part of the class Literacy Lab).

Grading based on daily classroom performance, core standards based on the Language! scoring rubrics, Exeter High School Student Expectation Rubrics, Essays and Tests, as well as teacher observation and class work. Grades are updated by 2:45 as necessary. Grades are determined on a point value. As a yearlong course, semester grades will be averaged by quarter grades and midterm/final exam (worth 20%/20%/10% each semester).

Attendance:

Attendance will be taken each period. Procedures for attendance and tardiness according to the EHS Handbook will be followed.

Homework/Class work:

Ongoing homework is to read 20-30 minutes each night. If there is other homework assigned, the time spent should equal 30 minutes. Homework will be posted each Monday (one week out) and will be updated as necessary. When students are absent they are expected to check to see what work has been missed and keep current by checking the Ms. Argyros's Webpage on the Exeter High School Site.

Cheating/Plagiarism:

With the use of the Internet, plagiarism has become a serious academic problem. Anyone who plagiarizes will receive a zero and will not have the opportunity to redo the assignment. Parents will be notified. What constitutes plagiarism will be reviewed in class and students will be asked to sign a sheet stating they will not plagiarize. Students should do their own work and always put ideas into their own words.

Appropriate Behavior:

Disrespect shown toward teacher, peers, or school property will receive disciplinary referral procedures as outlined in the EHS handbook.

Food/Drink:

Water bottles only allowed in class, no food or drink in the classroom.

Cell Phones:

Cell Phones are not allowed in class, unless they are used for educational reasons as directed by the teacher. Incoming calls/texts will not be answered in class. Cell phones will be stored in a storage area. Phones have become a distraction in class. Students are free to get their phones during the break.
