Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre in the Malaysian Sabah District of North Borneo was founded in 1964, to rehabilitate orphan orang utans.  The facility provides medical care for orphaned and confiscated orang utans as well as dozens of other wildlife species. Some of the other animals also being treated at the centre include; Sun Bears, Gibbons Sumatran Rhinos and the occasional injured Elephant.

HELP FOR HEROES is a strictly non-political charity, it raises money to support members of the Armed Forces who have been wounded in the service of their country.  They believe that anyone who volunteers to serve in time of war, knowing that they may risk all, is a hero. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things and some of them are living with the consequences of their service for life.

Orangutan adoption

We have adopted two orangutans at the Sepilok Rehab Centre, Sabah, Borneo: Chikita and Gelison via the Orangutan Appeal UK.

Adopting one of these young orangs is an excellent way to help this charity with their current projects and get something back in return for your support.

Your adoption pack will include a certificate, full history profile, photographs of your adopted baby and the latest Appeal newsletter. Adult packs will contain an Appeal jute bag, whereas children’s packs include an Appeal pencil case and activity sheets. Every adoptive parent will be sent an update on their baby’s progress, plus their latest photographs and the next newsletter in the series after 6 months.

Learn more how you can adopt and help on link above.

What kind of umbrella are orangutans?

You may have heard that orangutans are an umbrella species, but what does this really mean?

It means that orangutans share the rainforest with a large number of other species and that they depend on each other for survival. And how many other species can be saved by saving the orangutans and the rainforest in which they live?

It is estimated that at least five other primates five hornbill species, 50 different fruit tree species and 15 liana species depend on the orangutans and share their habitat.

This means that by helping save the orangutans you are helping to save an additional 75 species. That is one large orange, fuzzy umbrella.
