Lesson 1  - Still text on a moving background

In this lesson you will place a moving image on layer 1 and some text on layer 2. Then by using an effect on layer 2 to make the blacks or whites transparent you will be able to see the moving image in layer 1 behind parts of the text.

A – Set up layer 1

On your lighting console select layer 1 and set the intensity parameter for layer 1 to a DMX value of 255 (100%).

Set the library folder and file parameters to choose a piece of content that has some movement and that you would like to see behind your text. Once selected you should see this movie on the catalyst output 1 display screen.

On your lighting console set the Play mode parameter to a DMX value of 2 (play loop forward). The movie file will begin playing.

B – Set up layer 2

On your lighting console select layer 2 and set the intensity parameter for layer 2 to a DMX value of 255(100%).

Set the library and file parameters to choose an image of the text that you want to use. Once selected you will only see the text on your display screen as the higher number layers are always stacked on top of the lower numbered layers.

C – Turn layer 2 background transparent.

With layer 2 still selected on your lighting console set the colour effects parameter to a DMX value of 3 (Transparent Blacks). Once selected the black background of the text will become transparent and the layer 1 image will show through the transparent area.

Alternatively you can set the colour effects parameter to a DMX value of 4 (Transparent Whites) and the white areas of the text image will become transparent and layer 1 will show through the transparent areas.
