3rd-5th Grade Garden Walkways Complete!

posted Dec 16, 2014, 3:06 PM by PTA President   [ updated Dec 16, 2014, 3:13 PM ]

We encourage you to go for a little stroll in our School’s 3rd – 5th grade garden (along 4th street) and discover some of the neat mosaics created by our 4th and 5th graders.  They are now nicely displayed in the beautiful walkways created this past Sunday, December 14th, 2014!

A huge thank you to Bob Kille (husband of 4thgrade teacher Ms. Barry) for offering the awesome workshop on creating garden walkways with bricks and with – in our case – beautiful mosaic pavers made by our own 4th and 5th graders! If you see Mrs. Barry, please thank her and let her know what you thought of the garden walkways!

Thank you to our eager volunteers: 4th grader (May) Kevin Seckinger and his mother, Kim Seckinger; Kai Shao, father of 3rd grader (Crawley) Selena Shao; 3rd grader (Crawley) Yihua and his father, Yuan Jiang Chen; Maria and David Lemon, grandparents of 4th grader (Barry) Riordan Lemon; 3rd grader (Astrene) Alex Kong and his mother, Shuqiong Kong; 4th grader (May) Salma Pedersoli and her grandmother, Janna Nutt; 4th grader (Harris) Riana Chatterjee and her mother, Lopa Chatterjee; 3rd grader (Rodarte) Mia Kelso and her mother, Christina Kelso; 2nd grader (Dunscomb) Trace Ricard and his grandfather, Lou Ricard; and 2nd grader (Cueto) Kellan Regan and his mother, Eilan Regan!

Thank you to George Huguenin for the donation of 443 bricks, and to Janna Nutt for facilitating the donation.  Thank you to Nate Ludwig, Vietnam Veteran and Sam Hughes neighbor, for driving his truck to transport the bricks to our School loading and unloading them with the help of volunteers: 3rd grader (Astrene) Alex Kong and his mother, Shuqiong Kong; Kai Shao, father of 3rd grader (Crawley) Selena Shao; Janna Nutt, grandmother of 4th grader (May) Salma Pedersoli; Theresa McLaughlin, mother of 4th grader (Barry) David Dean McLaughlin; 2nd grader (Korman) Sveta and  5th grader (Jaeger) Euan Tusingwire and their mother, Pamela Tusingwire.  Thank you to Ken, Theresa and 4th grader (Barry) David Dean McLaughlin for the donation of sand and mortar.

Thank you to our 4th and 5th graders for creating amazing mosaics with broken decorative tiles donated by Santa Theresa Tile Works, stained glass scraps donated by Tucson Stained Glass, glass beads purchased from Tucson Stained Glass and glass beads donated by Gwen Vazquez, mother of 2nd grader (Cueto) Ian and 5th grader (Jaeger) Nomar Vazquez.  Thank you to our parent volunteers who supported the 4th and 5th graders while they were discovering the ways to make the mosaics: Brenda Frye, mother of Kinder (Damento) Eleanor, 3rd grader (Crawley) Abigail and 4th grader (May) Nathan Cherkis; Theresa McLaughlin, mother of 4th grader (Barry) David Dean McLaughlin; Gwen Vazquez, mother of 2nd grader (Cueto) Ian and 5th grader (Jaeger) Nomar Vazquez.  Thank you also to the 4th and  5th grade teachers!

Thank you to TJ Altamirano and Jimmy Hernandez, grandaunt and granduncle of 2nd grader (Dunscomb) Sophia Castañeda for donating TnJ Yard Services time and expertise to make the 3rd - 5th garden and its surrounding areas more accessible!

Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have worked hard along with the classroom parent/family gardeners during our gardening time, after school hours and in the weekends to improve the 3rd - 5th garden and its surrounding areas.

There is still a bit to be done, but we are very proud of and grateful for what we were able to accomplish during this semester with your help!

Thank you for your kind support of our greening and beautifying activities in our School!

Best wishes for a very Happy Holiday Season!

REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE!

Girl Scouts at Sam Hughes

posted Oct 21, 2014, 8:33 AM by PTA President

Hi,

My name is Kate Ashe. You may know me as 4th grader Annabelle’s Mom. I am one of the Girl Scout Leaders for Troop 1934. I didn’t get a lot of inquires at the Sam Hughes Meet yourself, so I thought I would drop a note on the Sam Hughes website.

At Girl Scouts, girls are always counting down to the next adventure we’ll go on together. Maybe it’s artistic. Maybe it’s an experiment. Maybe it’s getting outside or helping the community. With us, she’ll make a bunch of new friends and have a ton of new experiences that show her how exciting the world is, and how awesome she is, over and over again.

Troop 1934 is a Brownie / Junior level troop. Brownies are girls in 2nd and 3rd grade. Juniors are girls in 4th and 5th grade. We meet in the Sam Hughes Library on Tuesdays 4:15 pm – 5:30 pm. We currently have 5 openings in our troop. If you are interested send an email to gst1934tucson@gmail.com.

If you are thinking wow Girl Scouts; that is great, but my daughter is in kindergarten / 1st grade. Worry not. That is the Daisy level. To find a troop visit - ww.girlscoutssoaz.org; 4300 E. Broadway Blvd.; or call 520-327-2288.
And now if you are thinking Sam Hughes needs a Daisy Troop; you are right. Maybe you could be the Daisy Troop Leader? Danielle (that’s my co-leader) and I would be glad to help you get started. You may reach out to us or Niki Hoffman 520-319-3157, nhoffman@girlscoutssoaz.org for more information on becoming a volunteer. Just say Troop 1934 sent you.

Thank you for your time,
Kate Ashe and GS Troop 1934
