Google Docs - Home Page

When you click on Documents in the upper left-hand corner of your Gmail page, you will land on your Google Docs Home Page.  This is where you can manage all of your Google Docs files.  The home page is broken down into three main parts:
  • Toolbar:  contains shortcuts for working with documents.
  • Sidebar:  contains shortcuts to folders and views.
  • Document Pane contains the contents of the selected folder or view.
Using the Sidebar
  • To expand a folder or view, click the plus sign (+) next to the folder or view.
  • To collapse a folder or view, click the minus sign (-) next to the folder or view.
Viewing Items
  • Items can be viewed by specific criteria, type or shared items.
  • Click any of the plus signs (+) in the Sidebar.
Hiding a File
  1. Check the box next to the file you want to hide.
  2. Click the Hide button on the Toolbar.
  3. To unhide an item, click the plus sign (+) next to All Items and click the Hidden shortcut.  Check the box next to the item you want to Unhide and click the Unhide button on the Toolbar.
Renaming a File
  1. Check the box next to the file you want to rename.
  2. Click the Rename button on the Toolbar.
  3. Enter a new name for the file and press the Enter key.


Creating a Folder
  1. Click the New button on the Toolbar.
  2. Select Folder from the drop-down menu.
  3. Enter a name for the folder and press the Enter key.
Moving a File to a Folder
  1. Check the box next to the file you want to move.
  2. Click the Move to button on the Toolbar.
  3. Select the folder you want to move the item to in the drop-down box.
  4. Click the Move to folder button.
Deleting a Folder or File
  • To delete a folder, click the All folders shortcut in the SidebarCheck the box next to the folder you want to delete and click the Delete button on the Toolbar.
  • To delete a file, check the box next to the file you want to delete and click the Delete button on the Toolbar.
Uploading a File
  1. Click the Upload button on the Toolbar.
  2. Choose whether you want to upload a file from your computer or upload a file on the web.
  3. To upload a file from your computer, click the Browse button.  Locate and select the file you would like to upload and click the Open button.
  4. To upload a file on the web, enter the URL in the Or enter the URL of a file on the web box.
  5. (Optional):  Enter a name for the item in the What do you want to call it? box.
  6. Click the Upload File button.
