Exit Exam - 7th Orchestra

Students will be responsible for learning and individually performing a printed sheet of technique requirements. Students may attempt to pass off each requirement as many times as they would like without penalty. The assignment must be completed before the end of the trimester. Two points extra credit will be awarded for requirements passed off before June.

Solo & Ensemble Project

One experience that each musician should have during their musical career is to play in a small ensemble AND to play a solo. Small ensembles require rhythm independence, group work and critical thinking. Solos allow you to express your own musical voice. For this project, you will be required to rehearse and perform both a solo and a quartet. As a performer, you must look beyond what is written on the page and bring your piece to life! 

Your final grade will be a compilation of the following grades:
Ensemble Practice Log Sheet (50 points)
Ensemble Performance (50 points)
Ensemble Project Reflection Sheet (25 points)
Memorized Solo (50 points)

We will be having recitals in class the week of March 12th. During these recitals, we will hear both ensemble and solo performances. The following are the expectations of each performance.

Ensemble Performance (50 points)
• Perform during class. You will receive a score based on the quality of your performance (tone quality, intonation, rhythmic accuracy, style, balance, blend, interpretation)
• Dress up for your performance.
• Start and end the performance without verbal communication.
• Bow, as a group, following your performance.

Memorized Solo (50 points)
Each student will:
• Learn and perform (by memory) a brief lyrical melody. The melody must be legato. It may be a folk song, hymn, from a movie or musical, or may be composed by the student (must be notated).
• On the day of the performances you will receive a score based upon the quality of your performance (memory, tone quality, vibrato, correct rhythm, correct notes, breathing, phrasing, and expressiveness)

Collage Concert Information

Dear Seventh and Eighth Grade Music Parents and Students,

The music students are having a dress rehearsal for their collage concert at the high school on the following dates:
    7th Grade: Monday, December 19th
    8th Grade: Tuesday, December 20th

The purpose of this dress rehearsal is for students to know when and where they need to be throughout the program. The collage concert will be a non-stop collection of musical ensembles. The rehearsal will go from 7:50 am to 11:10 am and will be at the high school auditorium. There are not enough buses available at this time to transport all of the music students from the middle school to the high school. The following is how we would like to resolve this dilemma.
  • Students that ride a bus that stops at the high school will get off the bus at the high school and go directly to the high school auditorium. Students will need to remember to take their instrument and music home with them the night before. 
  • Parents who bring their child to school are asked, if possible, to drop your child off at the high school. Students will need to remember to take their instrument and music home with them the night before. 
  • Students who walk to school will be provided bus transportation from the middle school to the high school or their parents may take them to the high school. Students who will be taken to the high school by a parent will need to remember to take their instrument and music home with them the night before. 
Bus transportation from the middle school will be provided for any student who cannot get to the high school via school bus or parent transport. All students will be provided bus transportation from the high school to the middle school.
  • Lunch: Students may either bring their own lunch OR buy lunch at the high school. There are many choices available for purchase by cash or by using their school lunch code. 
  • Instrument transportation: We will transport the following instruments to the High School: baritone saxophone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, percussion, cello, bass. The students will be responsible for transporting all other instruments themselves.
  • Drop off at the high school: Students should be dropped off at the front entrance on Campus Parkway. Please do not drop off in the circle drive by the auditorium. That area is for buses only. 
Report time for the 7th Grade Collage Concert (12/19/11) is 7:00 PM, the concert begins at 7:30 PM.
Report time for the 8th Grade Collage Concert (12/20/11) is 7:00 PM, the concert begins at 7:30 PM.

Visual Project

Each person will draw a musical term from a hat.  Using that musical definition, think of a creative way to depict the meaning of your term WITHOUT USING ANY WORDS.  You may use any artistic medium of your choosing (ex:  sculpture, painting, photography etc.) that you think best portrays the meaning of your word.  


Your final project needs to include the following:

Name

Grade

Musical Term and its “official” musical definition (typed)

ORIGINAL Artistic Portrayal

Paragraph (ON BACK of project) describing why you chose to portray it how you did
