Updated AP Exam Info:

AP Calculus BC Exam will take place on Tuesday, May 12 at 2:00PM.

Exam timing

Students will have 25 minutes to read and respond to Question 1, and then 5 minutes to upload their response. After uploading the response to Question 1, students will have 15 minutes to respond to Question 2, with 5 additional minutes to upload their response to Question 2. Once their response to Question 1 has been submitted, they cannot go back to it.

Questions

Question 1 (25 mins.), 60% of exam weight, Free-response

Question 2 (15 mins.), 40% of exam weight, Free-response

The questions will each assess student knowledge and skills developed in 2 or more of the eligible units and topics.  They will consist of similar components to traditional AP Calculus exam questions, with minor modifications to enable students to choose to submit either typed or handwritten responses.

Units eligible for 2020 exam

Units 1–8 + 5 topics in Unit 10 (10.2, 10.5, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.11)

Units not included in 2020 exam

Unit 9, Unit 10 (except Topics 10.2, 10.5, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.11)

Other course-specific info

  • For students who prefer to type their responses on a computer rather than handwriting and photographing, we will provide a “keyboarding tip sheet” in advance of the exam, with suggestions on how to enter various mathematical expressions on a regular keyboard.
  • Questions on the 2020 AP Calculus BC Exam are designed such that a graphing calculator or other calculator is not required. However, use of a calculator is allowed. Simple (“four-function”) calculators are freely available as apps for computers and phones (i.e. most or all internet-connected devices), and can be installed beforehand for use on the exam.
  • No arithmetic or calculations will be required beyond what can readily be done with pencil and paper. As always, AP Calculus BC students are advised to submit “unsimplified” numeric answers, in order to avoid risking arithmetical errors not related to calculus.

Make-up test date and time [you would have to check with Mrs. Mangum to see if you would be eligible to take it on the make-up date]

Date: June 1

  • Eastern Time: 4 p.m.

Updated Dual Enrollment Info:
**********as of 4/17/20, don't do anything with this yet.  If you did, it's okay though.**********
Letter from VWCC:

Dear Dual Enrollment Students,

I hope that this communication finds you healthy and moving forward with your spring semester classes. As we have said before, but I want to say again, Virginia Western is committed to supporting you and helping you and your high school to complete these classes with the needed learning to successfully move on to future classes or graduate. COVID-19 had forced us to deliver your classes in ways that none of us intended. For this reason, the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) had made emergency policy changes for Spring Semester 2020 only to help the colleges and our students. These changes can be found at https://www.virginiawestern.edu/covid19/grading/. These changes will be applied the same for both Dual Enrollment and regular college students.

The changes and what you need to do are listed below:

  1. Withdrawal Deadline

    1. The Withdrawal deadline has been extended to May 8.

    2. To withdraw from a class up until the deadline, each student should work with their high school to understand the impact of a withdrawal on both their high school graduation requirements and their college transcript. If this is deemed appropriate, the high school should contact Kathy Beard at Virginia Western. This process is the same as it has been in the past with the exception of the deadline.

    3. Guidance for students on Withdrawals:

      1. A “W” grade does not count towards a student’s GPA but does appear on their Virginia Western transcript.

      2. A class with a “W” grade does not count towards graduation requirements

      3. Students are only allowed to repeat a class three times during their college career. A “W” grade counts as one of these repeats.

      4. A “W” grade could impact future financial aid.

      5. This may also impact high school graduation requirements.

  1. Grading Scale

The default grading scale for spring semester will be the P+, P- W scale listed below. Unless a student opts for the A-F grading scale, faculty will use the default grading scale. The “WC” grade will be treated the same as a “W” grade.

Letter Grade

What does the Grade Mean?

How does it Apply?

P+

Pass with a grade of “C” or higher

Applies to college transfer and technical education courses. A grade of P+ will not impact a student’s GPA. A grade of P+ will transfer to Virginia Public Universities, except the University of Virginia.

P-

Pass with a grade of “D”

Applies to college transfer and technical education courses. A grade of P- will not impact a student’s GPA. Will count towards Virginia Western graduation but will not transfer.

W

WC

Withdraw

Withdraw/COVID-19

A student-initiated withdrawal through the revised deadline of May 8, 2020

A faculty member may award a WC for a student who did not initiate the withdrawal or did not pass.

I

Incomplete

The faculty member and student may agree to a plan to complete the remaining course requirements. The College has waived the requirement that students must complete 60% of course competencies and attendance requirements in order to receive a grade of Incomplete.  The Colleges has also agreed to allow students up to two semesters to complete the requirements for the course.

  1. Students may opt for the standard A-F grading scale.

    1. A survey will be sent to all dual enrollment instructors to distribute to their students that gives students the opportunity to select the A-F scale. If a student selects the A-F option:

      1. You must do so by May 8, 2020.

      2.  You may only do this once. Once it is done, you have selected the option and can’t change it. You will receive a grade on the A-F scale rather than the COVID-19 P+, P-, W grading scale above.

      3. Guidance on when students might want to consider this option:

        1. If you are transferring to UVA, an out of state college, or a private college that has not agreed to accept the P+ grade in transfer. Please check with your transfer institution in making this decision.

          1. Please note than when a course transfers, it only transfers for course credit and does not impact a student’s GPA at the transfer institution.

        2. If you are trying to raise your GPA for graduation or academic standing purposes.

        3. If you simply want a letter grade.

Here is the info for you to choose to switch to an A-F grade instead of having it default to Pass/Fail:

If you do not complete this, the default for your VWCC grade will go to a P/F for the course and they will not be able to change that.

3/20/20, 7pm

HUGE AP Exam Update:
The highlights:
1.  No multiple choice
2.  45 minutes of free response questions online at home
3.  They will provide online resources to help us prepare for what's coming
4.  The following topics are NOT on this year's exam:
Unit 9:  Parametric, Polar, and Vectors
Unit 10:  everything is cut from Unit 10 EXCEPT for Geometric Series; Harmonic Series and p-Series; Alternating Series             Test; Ratio Test [YAY!]; and Finding Taylor Polynomial Approximations of Functions.  (These are Topics 10.2, 10.5, 10.7, 10.8,             and 10.11).  To see the topics from Unit 10 that got cut, see the full listing of topics here https://www.albert.io/ap-calculus-ab-bc, and             read everything that is NOT Topic 10.2, 10.5, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.11 and give yourself a happy high-five!
5.  "The full exam schedule, specific free-response question types that will be on each AP Exam, and additional testing details will be available by April 3. We'll also unlock any relevant free-response questions in AP Classroom for digital use so students can access all practice questions of the type that will appear on the exam."
6.  "Colleges support this solution and are committed to ensuring that AP students receive the credit they have worked this year to earn. For decades, colleges have accepted a shortened AP Exam for college credit when groups of students have experienced emergencies."

This is so new and rapidly changing that I will have to think about how to optimize and best-utilize our time together.  It depends a lot on how useful the AP-provided material is...maybe we use a lot of that?  I don't know yet.  But, I think it's great news that they have scaled back the content of the exam, and a lot of what they removed is really ugly:).  You don't need to do Monday's class lesson that I recorded today.  I will decide what to replace that with and let you know before Monday at noon.

Have a great weekend!

For those not wanting to scroll to the bottom, respond to my "checking in" survey found here if you haven't already:

3/18/20, 6:45pm

I hope you had a great day!  I sent out group emails to all of my students, which I will continue to do as updates occur.  As of 6:45pm, I have heard back from 33 of you, so quite a few have not checked in.  Please tell your friends so that more people will be informed:).

I decided to answer some of the "questions and concerns" that I received so far from the check-in survey that I feel qualified to answer.  It'll be fun:):

"When will office hours be?"  Administration has set aside Fridays from 9-3 for teacher office hours.  This could include a phone call, video chat, or even an in-school visit for additional help...just ask for what you need.  I would be more than happy to help anyone at anytime, really.  Hopefully, the Zoom sessions will answer most student questions, but if not, then I would be happy to have additional sessions outside of the time slots previously indicated.  Just ask me for whatever help you need.
"Sometimes my cats walk on my keyboard while I'm working"  I can relate, and that's a HUGE concern:).
"I'm a bit worried about how well I'll be able to understand the taught curriculum during this "spring break"."  You will be fine...and I'll be happy to help as much as you'd like me to in order for you to understand.  It'll all work out fine:).
"will this effect the ap exam/will they be changing any testing dates";  "I want to be fully prepared for the AP test, and I do not want this change to greatly affect that preparation. I also want to be fully prepared for the mock exam in time (although I am not sure if that is still happening?)"; "None regarding class/grades, only slightly worried about being prepared for AP test in time (assuming it won't be cancelled)"  AP is still trying to come up with a plan as for how to handle the situation.  They are even considering the option of testing at home if it should come to that.  Here is the direct link to AP's thoughts:  https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/coronavirus-update  We are sitting in a pretty good spot right now in our preparation.  A couple more weeks of new stuff, then we'll be 100% into review.  There are soooo many fun, old AP questions that we can practice with, and I'll be happy to record videos of all of my solutions to them whilst pointing out any nuances in the problems, which types of questions come up all the time, and the similarities between all of the problems of the same type.  However AP decides to test, if you consistently put in approximately an hour per weekday between Monday and May 5th, you should be well prepared.  As far as the mock exam is concerned, don't stress about it.  We'll cross that bridge when we get to it, and I'm really really fair and reasonable as a general rule:).
...and here are your ideas so far:
Keep listing quotes. Perhaps even a separate “zoom” section of quotes!  Yes!
We will have to think of how to host online parties!  You got THAT right!
we should have a class party but everyone just brings a snack to their computers for the zoom thingy  Perfect!
Keep up the jokes  Absolutely!
Can we see Ninja?  That can be arranged:)
Keep recording lectures.  Yes
sporcle  Yes
Hang man  Yes
Continue to play games!! And to look up random things on google, maybe we could hear your music, since I assume you won't be able to perform at restaurants for a bit! :)  All great ideas!
bring ninja into the video  She will love that:).
We should have virtual class parties  Absolutely!
We could do a class Zoom meeting to check in with everyone a few times  Yes, hopefully most of you can make it at least once a week in the designated times listed below.
Can you send out emails about any changes on the website just in case me or anyone doesn’t see a change?  Great idea, and I will.
We need to find a substitution for these parties  Absolutely!  No way are we stopping now!!!

3/17/20, 12:18pm

Hey guys!  Welcome to Virtual Calculus!!!  I know it's a weird time, but we'll get through it.  There is no expectation for any student to do anything this week, so it's like another Spring Break!  Starting Monday 3/23, I will be hosting a Zoom session according to the following schedule:

Mon/Wed:
9:00-10:00am    Period 1
12:00-1:00pm    Period 3
1:00-2:00pm      Period 5

Tues/Thurs:
9:00-10:00am    Period 2
1:00-2:00pm      Period 6

I will also be recording YouTube videos of the classroom content and homework solutions, as usual.  My initial idea is to use the Zoom sessions at the times indicated above to meet together as a group and to go over any questions that you have, but I am open to other suggestions as well.

If you are in periods 1, 3, 5, or 6, you can join any of the above Zoom sessions at your convenience as long as it doesn't interfere with your participation in other teachers' Zoom sessions.

What, pray tell, is a "Zoom" session, you may ask?  It's awesome...probably invented by Stu:).  I will set up a session for fun later in the week to test it out, work out the glitches, and to ask any questions. [updated 3/17 1:30]

I don't know if you need a Zoom account or not, so that's one of the questions we can iron out.  It'll be a learning process, and hopefully we can be ready to hit the ground running [or at least walking] by Monday next week.  Again, we'll get through this and have some fun in the process.

If you are reading this, please tell your friends so that we will all be on the same page.  Also, please respond to my "checking in" survey found here:

Have a great day!!!
