o   I will also be integrating the 8 parts of speech in morning work to help with our writing… these are prepositions, interjections, nouns, conjunctions, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs.

·         Science: Chapter 2- Continue photosynthesis

o   Test will be next Wednesday or Thursday

·         Social Studies: Continue Early Exploration

o   Biography Words test on all people for the chapter on 10/10

***I personally handed out these copies (all people and all vocabulary) to the students on 9/27.  We also listed these in their notebooks.  I told the students to leave these at home so that they can practice studying.  If you misplace them, you will need to look in your book.  **Responsibility is a skill and Mrs.

The All Saints Day projects were assigned today (10/6) and will be presented on November 1st and I have attached the list along with the Saint the students chose. (If your child was not here, they will have to pick when they get back to school.) 

The project will be considered a test grade and the student will be graded in 3 different areas:

1.    Presentation- The student will dress as their Saint on November 1st and present as their Saint using 1st person pronouns (i.e. “I” or “me”).  The student is allowed to read from notecards. J

2.    The student will write a one page paper about their Saint.  This paper should include a background about their Saint, why they are a Saint, and some fun facts.  This can be written on the paper attached or the student may type it.

3.    The student will fill out the Saint page given out in class today.

·         Missing Assignments are still a problem in the classroom.  I try to put things in the Monday Message in advance so that the students can practice good time management skills.  I have already put this into place in the classroom; however, for each assignment that is late, I will start taking off points as to be fair to all of those students who are consistently doing their work.  I will also continue to mark STAR folders for Missing Assignments.  Three STAR folder marks in one week = a lunch detention.  The purpose for the lunch detention is to show the students that they need to be held accountable for their work/behavior.  I send home the reflection sheet that they are required to fill out.  Please go over this with your child so that we can work together to help make your child feel successful and accomplished. J

The weekly homework expectation is that students are spending 10-20 minutes each night studying vocabulary and spelling words.   There will be a test on Friday on all 18 vocabulary words and a separate spelling test on all 18 of the same words.


 


Borrowers Box Project: The borrowers have made tiny furniture and other things out of household objects.  At the end of the book study, we will be making out own “Borrowers Box” in class.  I ask that you save a shoe box for them to use for this activity.  They will also need to be looking out for items for their own borrowers box which we will be going over more in class as we read through the book.  They can be as creative as they want and no items need to be purchased.  The box will be started on Nov. 1st and the weeks will go as follows for the book study:


·         Week of 9/26- Chapters 7-9


·         Week of 10/3- Chapters 10-12


·         Week of 10/10- Chapters 13-15


·         Week of 10/17- Chapters 16-18


·         Week of 10/24- Chapters 19-20


·         Week of 11/1- Borrowers Box Project & Movie


 


**We will still incorporate the Sadlier vocabulary workshop book each week.

Tuesday, September 27th


·         Chapter 2 Math Test


·         Science Vocabulary quiz on Chapter 2 words:


o   Chlorophyll, chloroplast, grana, nonvascular plant, phloem, photosynthesis, stomata, transpiration, vascular plant, & xylem


Wednesday, September 28th:


·         Social Studies Chapter 1 Test


Thursday, September 22nd:


·         Grammar Quiz on nouns


Friday, September 30th:


·         Reading Test on Chapters 7-9 in “The Borrowers”


·         Vocabulary/Spelling test

·         Religion: Chapter 3


·         Reading: Vocabulary Story: “Wagon Train Diary” p. 36-37 in Sadlier vocabulary workbook.

o   We will read “The Borrowers” and will read chapters 7-9 in class


·         Writing: Paragraph Structures- topic sentence, relevant details, and conclusion sentences


·         Grammar: Continue nouns

****Important Information to know this week:


·         Make sure assignment books are being checked and initialed! J


·         Because of the continuous late assignments, I am having the students fill out a missing work form (An example of this I have attached.)  They will still receive a homework MA mark in their Star Folder; however, this way they are responsible for their assignment and notifying their parent/guardian.  I ask that you sign the sheet so that they can still get partial credit for completing their work.  I try not to email unless homework becomes a specific problem towards an individual as to hold the students accountable for themselves. J


 


Special Upcoming Dates:


o   5th grade will be doing mass on October 12th now… the schedule was revised! J


o   Please fill out the attached field trip forms for our food bank days- I’ll keep them filed until the date- if you are interested in driving for one or both of the field trips, please indicate that on the form.


 


***If you want to assist/volunteer in the classroom and/or drive for field trips, please make sure that you complete the necessary forms.
