Problem of the Week

for Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012

August H. wants to know how many 9 by 9 sudokus there are. There are well over a trillion and the number is hard to calculate. Our question this week is a bit easier. How many 3 by 3 sudokus (or Latin Squares) are there? In other words, in how many ways can you place the numbers 1, 2, and 3 in the grid so that every row and column will have one of each numeral?
