A Checkpoint is a certain time during the year that you should have a certain topic MASTERED. This means you can complete these problems correctly and consistently. In other words, your grade for the quiz should be 100%, because you should know the concept by that time.
A Checkpoint Quiz is a chance for you and me to check that you DO have the topic mastered. If so, you will get credit for mastering the topic. If not, you will have a chance to learn before moving on!
We will usually do 1-2 Checkpoint Quizzes per chapter. These quizzes will be done online using a site called DeltaMath. You will be required to do these quizzes on your own time, outside of class.
To master a Checkpoint, you will need to answer a certain number of problems correctly in a row on that topic. You may have as many tries as you need, and you will have access to video help.
I will put in a grade for the quiz on the due date. Those grades will either be 100%, 50%, or 0%.
If you DO NOT do the quiz by the due date ... your score will be 0%
If you do the quiz but don’t get 100% ... your score will be 50%
If you get 100% on the quiz ANYTIME ALL SEMESTER ... your score will be 100%!
Do your homework regularly and you will get plenty of practice!
Start your quiz early! Don’t wait until the day it is due.
Come to Power Hour and ask questions to get help on topics that are challenging you.
We will usually do a Team Test and an Individual Test for each chapter. Every test will include a mix of topics from previous chapters and the current chapter. The topics assessed on each chapter test will be similar to the ones that you saw on the homework during that chapter. They will be graded using the rubric on the next page.
Team Tests have fewer problems, but they are not easy. You will have to work with your team to be successful. Individual Tests have more problems but they are usually faster.
Tests should always be completed during one class period, but you can request extra time by talking to Ms. Bowyer. If you are absent for a Team Test, you can be excused from it or have the option to make it up. If you are absent for an Individual test, you will have one week to make it up before it is a 0.
Do your homework regularly and you will get plenty of practice!
If you want additional practice before the test, come to Power Hour.
There are no re-takes or corrections available for Team Tests.
Any student who earns less than 4 out of 5 points on any problem(s) on the Individual Test will have the option to correct those problems and reflect on your mistakes.
All information about how to do corrections will be given to you when you get your graded test back. There will be a deadline to complete corrections.
All assessments are graded on a 5-point rubric. The meanings of each score are below:
4 - 100% Perfect! You fully accomplished the purpose of the task. Your work shows the full grasp and use of the central mathematical idea(s). You have demonstrated clear thinking on the assessment.
3.5 - 93% Everything above EXCEPT you made a small calculation error that led to an incorrect final answer.
3 - 85% You only missed one small idea and mostly accomplished the purpose of the task. Your work shows the essential grasp of the central mathematical idea(s). Your recorded work mostly communicates your thinking.
2 - 70% You only missed one small idea and mostly accomplished the purpose of the task. Your work shows the essential grasp of the central mathematical idea(s). Your recorded work mostly communicates your thinking.
1 - 55% You are halfway there and partially accomplished the purpose of the task. Your work shows partial but limited grasp of the central mathematical idea(s). Your recorded work may be incomplete, somewhat misdirected, or not clearly presented.
0.5 - 40% You’ve made little or no progress towards accomplishing the task. Your recorded work is barely (if at all) comprehensible.
0 - 0% You’ve made NO effort (you left the problem blank).
