Department of Foreign Languages

“One can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Lewis Carroll, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”

The Department of Foreign Languages is part of the School and shares its vision for equipping well-rounded students for entry into the global community. The mission of Foreign Languages, is to develop students’ communicative abilities in their chosen foreign language(s) of study Communication skills, linguistic dexterity, critical thinking and cultural awareness provide learners with the practical tools they will need in today’s competitive, multilingual marketplace; of equal importance is the broader understanding of society the student acquires through cultural exchange in the target language.

There are more than 40 highly qualified teachers of 5 foreign languages, working in our department. Pupils start learning foreign languages at the age of 6-7; at the age of 11 some of them begin to study a second foreign language, either European or Chinese. A diverse and friendly department, we and our students share a love of language, literature and culture and a passion to excel in understanding them.

The Department achieves its goals through diverse and interdisciplinary research, support of excellence in teaching, and experiences in and out of the classroom designed to enhance foreign language acquisition, the study of literature and culture, and international awareness. The majority of our teachers are advanced users of ICT. We try to focus on 21st century student outcomes and help them to master 21st century skills.
